    hmmm...
I'd say it could be illegal in many countries, but phew, good luck to the man that wants to prosecute mr.spammer there (red tape alert).
You should [1]. Buy the CD ROM, then [2]. Forward that message to everyone who's listed on the CD ROM.
Let them take care of it.

    bleh.

yeah, I don't *mind* receiving spam 'cos I just delete it anyway.

I don't like the idea of "15 million" email addy's getting sold to some company, who will sell them to someone else, etc etc.

there is no actual law against spam is there? (just curious - especially about the ones that advertise adult services and sites... considering the ads for those types of businesses have a watershed in most countries (i think) - it's a bit dodgy having them send that stuff to accounts that could belong to kids.

for example, I got a spam that had the Subject describing - in a non subtle way - a female child's genitalia... apart freom it being and ad for kiddie porn , it was IMO a bit explicit to risk kids seeing. I know they can see worse on the internet, but things like net nanny etc. do help limit that exposure.).

    Anyhoo, just a general *****/whine/moan.

I think there is one or two american laws, but I don't think they cover selling of e-mail addresses.

Nope, I'm afraid it's not. Not in Ireland.

Yeah, that's real clever - add to the problem.

You *should* mind - it's costing you money. If you're on a leased line and don't care, well, that's a bit of a selfish attitude.

There are a few laws covering Spam in the US, but they're pretty ineffective, because the direct marketing associations - they're the people that stuff crap in your mailbox every day - in the US are a powerful lobby group (like the NRA). They say you can send Spam as long as it's marked as such, and removal systems are implemented. Unfortunately both are rare, and the cops won't take the time to track spammers down (a tricky business anyway).

As to the selling of email addresses, that's pretty much an open book, as is almost everything in the US. We have very strict policies in Europe and particularly in Ireland and the UK - the Data Protection Act, however. If you think someone is abusing your personal data, you should do something about it. If someone calls to the door, or phones you up, ask them their name and where they got their data. Follow it up, and tell the people to remove your data from their databases. They have to. In Ireland, it's not worth the risk not doing it.

Same goes for spam, particularly if it looks like an amateur. There's more and more of these coming on stream, and you can tell because they use real email addresses, or post real URL's in the emails. These are the people we have to stop, because you can catch them - real spammers are a pain in the **** to track down.

If you get one of these emails, particularly if it comes from someone in Ireland, look at the headers of the email and see where the spammer is coming from. Report the offense to *each* and *every* domain name in the headers - send an email of complaint to postmaster@domain.com and abuse@domain.com, including the email itself and the full headers. In Ireland, you have a much better chance of getting these people disabled, which will stand a good chance of screwing with their business.

    Shut the *******s down.

Not quite what I was getting at....
Only send to alert these people that their details are being sold on to spammers, and if these people enjoy getting spam, then fine... otherwise, they're possibly in a better postion (and perhaps more motivated) to do something about it.

Sorry man, the intention is good but the practise is bad. If you did do that, your message would be Unsolicited Bulk Email too - you'd be a spammer. And of course you'd be using Internet resources, which is my main problem with Spam - they're slowing down the Internet for everybody.

Of course I'm guilty of just ignoring spam just like everyone else, because there's very little you can do to stop the pro's - that's why they're pro's. But you *can* catch out the amateurs who think sending out UCE is a cheap marketing ploy.

An amateur sent me something about Linux training recently, and I posted his message and a request that people don't use his company on the main Irish Linux mailing lists. I can't guarantee that it stopped him, but I *can* guarantee that if he does it again I'll screw him to the wall.

Spam shouldn't be tolerated or encouraged. People should be careful with their email addresses, and Internet companies should operate the Double-Opt-In system or get off the net. Unfortunately, most web companies aren't as scrupulous about ethics as me.

So now everyone knows who I am, huh? smile.gif

Bah, well that was a whacky idea anyway smile.gif
Kinda' like when you say: string them up and shoot them!
    Here're another idea...
Ask him for his ICQ#, then get LowTax (from somethingawful.com) on his ass!

    Lowtax?
