US gym chain planning to create 140 new jobs in Ireland

This is on Irish Independent website today:
    11:51 Thursday March 10th 2005

A US company that operates a chain of gyms for men has announced plans to create 140 jobs as part of a move into the Irish market.
The company, Cuts Fitness for Men, said it had already established its first European outlet in the Walkinstown area of the Dublin and was planning to open up to 35 other premises nationwide by 2006.

It said six of the outlets would open in the coming months in Longford, Limerick, Ennis, the Douglas area of Cork and the Cabra and Castleknock areas of Dublin.

Does anyone know anything about them? Has anyone used the Walkinstown Gym? Is it only for men????

Haven't heard of the gym but afaik you can't make a mens only gym in Europe due to the equality laws so it has to be made a private club, I think some of the curves womens only gyms had issues here with that.

    Transform might know more.

Its actually located just above Curves at the Walkinstown roundabout.Im almost certain its just the male version of that.In other words in not an actual gym its more of a circuit training type thing.

http://www.cutsfitness.com/featured_franchise03.php has some pictures of it, looks kinda small.

"Cuts had a very good growth rate compared with other tried and tested circuit training workouts, such as Curves. The product is very effective, and the 30 minute training workout for men is a true niche market."

Great, that will churn out some stunning physiques

What I was wondering is how they could make 35 gyms profitable in Ireland, but if it's like Curves it's quite easy to make money charging €50 per month for some blue mats and a couple of machines with ONE resistance setting. [This is true of the Bray branch anyway]

The cuts gyms will just be male versions of the curves concept - as stated, circuit training basically! This method will work really well for the man who just wants to increase muscle 'tone' and get a program going. They normally do not have showering facilities and there is no cardio equipment (the most expensive pieces in any gym e.g. good treadmill is about €4-5000). Also most of the weights machines are air pressure based and as anyone who has used them (do they still have them in David LLoyds and Westpoint) will tell you that they do not give you a great workout.

Will they have a problem with a men's only gym? Possibly not as most people do not care and won't object and i am sure if they are planning so many they will have gotten their solicitor to work on it before franchising it out.

So all in all cuts should work as people can drop in do a quick workout out and home again. However, frommy experience i do like to have a nice sauna, chat to the regulars, move at my own pace, do some cardio etc. So we'll see -

NOTE - big tip for the next few years will be workouts outdoors in parks using benches and playgounds for chins and dips etc

I dunno, in the Summer if we get a heatwave, maybe, otherwise it would spawn a halting site from under use...

The one in Walkinstown is still going, however it's not only half the size as they've moved their curves down to the same floor and partitioned off the room.

no idea but are more people doing workouts outside now???

Overall the whole curves, cuts thing is slowly closing up (except in a few realy well run places) as people are expecting more from their time and better instruction.

Oh is it? I was thinking of joining curves for myself but I want to find an equivalent for my partner, he's not keen on the huge macho gym vibe if you get me.
