im travelling to new york later this year for 2 weeks. I've been looking at some hotels online, take the following site as an example http://www.hotelopia.net/home/homepage.jsp

There seems to be quite a few hotels which have shared bathroom facilites. Has anyone ever stayed in a hotel with this type of setup? Or got any recommendations or places to avoid.

    Cheers

    dave.

honestly imo shared bathroom facilities are very hit and miss.....do you really want to brush your teeth after some other guest has just dumped and stank the place out....and coz they are kinda public space no guest takes responsibility for them and they are often in a right unhygenic state
    just my 2cents... :)
have a look at www.tripadvisor.com too

Avoid this place at all costs. Anywhere above the 4th floor is for social housing or homeless people or some other shít. We stayed there just last week. Seriously depressing place it was.

I have stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania a few times and it is fine, cheap and in a good location.ITS ABOUT $99 per room per night but for every 3 nights you stay they give you the 4th free. Its Huge around 2000 rooms,as for location in the heart of midtown is directly opposite Madison Square Garden and Amtrak's Penn Station,Macy's, the world's largest department store, is one block up the street. The Empire State building one block away.

The place is so big if you dont like the room just tell them you want a change...I did this 4 times before ontill I got a room with a view.Check them out its a good cheap clean Hotel.

I second the Penslvania hotel. Great location, great rooms and 1700 rooms methinks. Huge TV in each room too!

yeah i stayed in the Pennsylvania too, kicked up a stink cause our room was a dump, was on the 2nd floor and looked out onto a brick wall. We complained and got moved to the best room on the 16th floor, amazing view too!!

It cost me about 500 to stay there for a week but location wise is fab. Madison Square Garden is across the road, H&M and Macys are the next block and the walk to Central Park is great. Its handy for Downtown too

    Avoid this one too..
We were overcharged there, and the service was terrible..
Also met a few other unsatisfied guests.
It's a good location, but not worth it.

i'd reccommend the hotel Bedford. 2mins walk to grand central terminal and 15mins from the empire state building. stayed there last june and loved it. loads of good restautants around the corner on lexington ave and we had a good view of the empire st bldg from our room. room was a bit basic but claen. had a stove and fridge too

thanks for that. I'll have a look around and see if i can find any prices for it. Who did you book with?

I think you should move that picture or something, as its took me ages to download it here at work so id say its terrible for people on dialup.

Well that's the thing. It's a great hotel so far as I can tell up until the 4th floor. Really good service and a slick bar/restaurant. Then after the 4th floor it becomes a nightmare. Really weird place!

came across this place on the web

    http://www.centralparkhostel.com/

Its a hostel but they have some studio apartments

    http://www.centralparkhostel.com/deluxe.html

working out at about 99dollars per night.

The hostel its self has got mixed reviews here - http://www.hostelz.com/display.php/549+Central+Park+Hostel+&+Inn

but it looks like those studio apartments are new.....

Hopefully it works out OK. In the end i paid $2200 for a two week stay. The apartment is in midtown.
