FireFox 1.1 gets my vote. Changed from IE6 and haven't looked back.

    Go with Firefox. www.getfirefox.com
It's the best imo. I've heard Opera is good too though, but do you have to pay for it?
Pretty sure all downs and firewalls will work the same yeah.. I've had firefox for about 6 months and I have no spyware/adware installed since i started using it. Before, when I was using IE, I would have to scan every 2 days.

Opera is fine. The ads are only up the top corner, they're not that bad. try it.
ive been using Avant Browser since they put it on every PC in Carlow IT's library. i think its just a shell for IE but it seems ok.

Maxthon is an IE6 based tabbed browser which works well and has some useful plugins and options.

Used Opera when it first came out and didn't think much of it. Used Avant for a bit and didn't reinstall when I lost it in a format.

Despite being unimpressed by the hype, I have to admit I do like Firefox.

I agree, Firefox is an excellent browser and deserves the hype. Its also ideal for beginners with its user friendly interface and simple opptions. It also has a religous following. Its not as cool to have Firefox now as before because the times of it being a well kept secret are long gone.

If you want a nice browser and dont want to follow the crowd check out Avant.

    http://www.avantbrowser.com/

Its tabbed and secure like Firefox and also has mouse gestures [a gift from god for power browsing] but is also fully customisable. Every window and menu can be dragged, docked, locked, skinned, etc. There are currently over 400 skins available and Im working on one of my own. It also has a true fullscreen feature [f11]

    screenshot:
    https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/36438/10922.jpg

There are a few nice advanced options such as URL alias, the ability to design your own skins, disable any type of web element etc etc.

I love it and can see it growing in popularity.

[ps- Im reccommending this as an alternative to Firefox. It is not an attack on the excellent Firefox.. I know how pround yall are]

You're firewall has nothing to do with your web browser. The firewall sits between your browser and the internet. It basically prevents the rest of the PC from seeing parts of the internet (if you want it to). So it'll be fine.

I would recommend either Opera or Firefox - I use both - my ideal browser would be a combination of the 2.

Opera for speed, look and feel and native tabbed browsing and mouse gestures.

Firefox for decent printing and better compatability, although I am sure hotmail will start sabotaging Firefox sooner or later (/me shakes fist)

Used Internet Explorer for years, and also a bit of Opera, but once I tried FireFox (due to it not working well with my site) I find it much better. Tabbs, Skins, Extensions, FireFox has it all. Its brilliant. Tad bit slow to load up but once it works its flying. Blocks ads you selected, and popups with a manager you can select what sites you allow for popups or dont allow! Blocks most spyware, I dont have to worry about Spyware anymore. (Tip: Use Microsofts Spyware Scanner if your on WinXP - its great, runs in the background and does the job to a "tee". Much better then Ad-Aware/SpyBot in my opinion!).

FireFox is the browser ya need mate, trust me!

I've been using firefox 1.0 for about 2 weeks now and i cant imagine going back to IE6. Anyone know what the difference is between 1.0 and 1.1?

Isn't it built on the IE shell? Which means it has all the security holes IE has?

i use opera and i think its fantastic, the mouse gestures are great (hold right mouse button and press left to go back a page) etc , type in address bar "g searchitem" to search google, lots of nice features, also when downloading look at top of screen, the beta 2 is the newest version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭Matthewthebig

You can get mouse gestures on Firefox

They fixed security issues as well as phishing URL attacks. It doesn't stop them but makes the URL look like it isn't from the site it is pretending to be.

If your going with Firefox, I recommend getting the AdBlock extension. You will never see adverts again. As as well as the bugmenot extension (lets you read register-to-read news sites without registering).

Also (shameless plug) I did up a firefox extension for private messages in boards.ie and some other bits and bobs. See the [wiki]Firefox plugins[/wiki] Biki.

[mood] don't forget that they haven't confirmed that they won't be charging for it in the future [/] and others would say that if they'd thought about security in the first place it wouldn't be needed anyway [/mood] :D

Opera v8 (beta/preview) release hands down!!!

They have sorted out niggling problems with javascript and also because it is just easier to use than Mozilla Firefox in general.
Firefox is sluggish but possible more user friendly than Opera due to a lot of commands in it for easier migration from MS Internet Explorer.

If you want to pay the €34 for getting rid of a small add box, then so be it, but for those who want to spare the money it isnt such a bad thing to have around when you see what you get in return!!!

I used versions of Opera from v6 to v8 and I believe that after a little modding there is no better browser out there.

If you want speed and ultra customiseability then OPERA!!!

Firefox is open source. Anything can be changed.

Any idea when opera 8 final is out? Looking forward to it, as I have a few javascript issues that are a bit annoying. Also, is gmail supported in v8?

To be fair it is compared to opera - I use both and opera is noticably faster.

"secret_squirrel" is correct in saying that Firefox is sluggish.
The cold start time of FireFox 1.0.1 is much longer than that of the Opera8 Build 7497.

Just because its open source means absolutely very little when it comes to modding...take a look...
    http://my.opera.com/community/

When I was modding Firefox it becamse very difficult to move around toolbars without having to download tab addons for instance.
Also a skin in Firefox seems to mean just changing the colours of the buttons but in Opera changes are much more significant.

True it is easier to get better integration between progs such as "Flashgot" in Firefox for Opera...but there are ways around such things.

With javascript issues finally fixed there is very little reason for switching between browsers if web pages dont load.

BTW "Ciaran500" I would prefer if you dont pick a line or two to disect but take what I have said above as a whole.

Unsure if there is gMail support but I think pop3 is supported..but unsure.

Also Opera8 Build 7497 appears stable to me...
    http://fileforum.betanews.com/sendfile/945720329/1/o80p5_7497.exe

the latest release is Opera8 Build 7498...so just change the 7 to 8 in the above path.

But as with all previews download and use it at your own risk!!!
