Puppy with worms

We've recently got a springer spaniel pup. 11 weeks old now.

Lately she sometimes gives a yelp now and again when you pick her up, but not so much this week.

On Saturday my wife took her to the vet to get her first vaccinations. The Vet also provided a worm tablet and told my wife to give the dog half on Saturday and half in 3 weeks.

We crushed half the tablet and gave it to her in food. About an hour later (2hrs after the vaccination) she got very listless and collapsed. We watched her for a while. She couldn't lift her head off her bed. We rang the vet and he said there should be no side affects from the vaccination but to watch her and if she didn't improve by the end of the day, bring her back on Sunday.
About 5 hours later we brought her out to her run and she vomited up all of her food.

Immediately, she got much happier and avtive. She was back to herself, but we didn't give her much food for the rest of the day. She is in full spirits now.

However, yesterday evening I noticed a worm, off white in colour, about 9cm long and about 2-3 mm thick.

I am going to call the Vet's when they open at 11.

Because she vomited I think she has probably brought up the worm tablet.
What could have caused her to get sick? The worm tablet, the vaccination or a worm infestation? Will it be difficult to clear up the worm infestation? I assume this is something that requires Vetinary assistance?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

You're really going to have talk to the vet. No one here can tell you over the internet, without seeing your dog or being an expert/trained in these things, it would really just be guesses.

Shouldnt even have asked here. Get her straight to the vet. Particualry dangerous for pups to get sickness of any kind, and particularly of this type. Best of luck. Hope shes gets better. :)

Just posted here first thing this monring cos the Vet wasn't on duty yet and I was worried.

Rang the vet this morning to see if we could bring her down but he said that she sounds okay, nothing major out of the ordinary. He said she was in good health on Saturday and probably was unwell on Saturday due to a combination of Vaccination and Worm tablet.

He said she should be okay to wait til her next visit in 2 weeks.

    Thanks,
    F

Sometimes vaccinations can make puppies a bit ill, so it's not a good idea to worm them on the same day as the vax.
Where ever you got the pup from she should of had at least two doses of wormer already. Pups need to be wormed regularly from about 6 weeks onwards.

You will need to worm the pup again PARAZOLE wormer is a more gentle wormer than the usual Drontol for puppies esp. if they are a bit sensative.
The worm tablet might of not had the most effective effect if she vomited a while after.
If she has a lot of worms ask the vet if it's ok to worm her again in about 3 days and then again 2 wks later not 3 weeks later.

Did the vet give you flea-treatment too? Fleas tend to spread tapeworm.
Most wormers break up or disolve the worm so you might not see the wormer working.

    Horrid things worms

Yes, the guy at the kennel told us that she had been wormed before and that he had wormed her again that morning.

Thanks, I'll check with the Vet

No, he didn't mention flea treatment. I'll check with the pet store.

Yeah, really horrid. The puppy's in great spirits though. Do you have to get parazole from the Vet or do pet stores stock it?

    Thanks for the advice.

Also, if you have children, or don't routinely wash your hands after handling your puppy, you might want to worm yourself and your family after you've wormed your dog. Sounds horrible, but better that you do it than find out later you've got worms...

Edit to say that you'll need to get worming tablets for humans from your chemist or doctor.

I've instilled it into the kids, wash their hands every time, no matter how brief the contact is with the pup.
