It is very hard for me to write something that does not praise the creators of Family Guy, but it must be done. I, along with many others I'm sure, was ecstatic with anticipation for this show. I was hoping for a show that was equally as funny as Family Guy, which could only be a good thing. How wrong I was. The aim of this show was to take on a political spin and generally poke fun at the government in contrast to being a plain funny show. This, in my opinion, is an opportune time for a politically satirical show. This and non-frequent jokes are the only difference from Family Guy. I was very put off by the unoriginality, each character has a counterpart in Family Guy. There is the oblivious, manly and dumb father. The sit-on-the-sidelines wife who is a homemaker and suppresses her feelings of how she hates her life. There is the daughter overwhelmed by angst and the awkward boy. Don't forget the witty and pompous character with a strange accent who is smaller than all the rest. Lastly, there is the stray creature that was taken in by the family who has an addiction to something. If you have seen either show you will understand what I mean. This show relies to heavily on using political humor, though that is the aim, it uses to much of it. Most of the jokes are unfunny and repetitive. It is trying to branch off clumsily from Family Guy,and a branch-off would most likely fail anyway. This is a failure waiting to happen.

I think 15 million people would disagree with that.

It was not as funny as family guy,but I still find it quite funny in parts.People have been expecting too much from it and were then disappointed.

It is probably similiar to family guy because FG was cancelled when this was picked up,it was some time later that FG was picked up again, which had not been expected.

I suppose if you dont get the political stuff then you wont enjoy it,I loved the terror alert system on the fridge and God calling Cheney "sir".

Its good, and i think will get better. But its still no Family Guy.

i thought it was great, better than family guy, betterly structured, jokes not flying everywhere out of the blue.

Yeah, am a huge Family Guy myself but had little hopes for the new show. I found it pretty funny.. definantly not hilarious but c'mon, you've seen one episode.

You can't get a proper judgement of a show for just the one episode. I thought the first episode of Family Guy was pretty poor. Then i keep watching and it became absolutely hilarious!

American Dad (episode 1) definantly had it's moments:
    - President Bush recieving a job from God about downplaying their relationship in public addresses
    - The dog ("Oh no! He's about to pee...... nope, dust!")
    - The new policy to stop people hugging, kissing, holding hands around the school. (the teacher buttoning up his shirt in front of the frog saying "It's too risky right now.. i'll come back tonight!")

Give 'American Dad' a chance. I'm more annoyed at the fact they cut short the 2nd series of Arrested Development to make way for it.

When will the first series be aired by the way?
I admit it would be odd if it did'nt get much funnier yet I still feel the basic set-up is flawed and trying to re-create Family Guy rather then try to create something new.

It will be aired alongside new Family Guy (WAHOOO!!!) from May 1st in the US.

Also, probably very few people saw these in the 'Prime Time Cartoons' forum so here you go.. some Family Guy Season 4 promo's .

I thought the pilot of american dad was really funny and the show has a lot of potential.

I think the first posters gripes with the characters are perhaps a little permature. If american dad is a branch off of family guy, then I suppose family guy could be a branch off of the simpsons or basically any other sitcom made in the last few decades. Just because the show is structured around the nuclear family or has parallels with a sitcom doesn't mean it is fatally flawed. What really matters is that the content within that structure is original i.e - the great political satire, rapid fire original jokes that seth and co are known for etc...

Any chance it will not go to Sky One initially?
Do you people not see the similarities in the characters between the two shows ,
stewie and the Goldfish are like carbon copies

Nope.. as far as i know BBC3 will have both the new series of American Dad / Family Guy first in the UK. Along with the new US remake of The Office.

Yes.... BBC3 is free on Sky Digital but you need to tune it in.
With your digibox turned on, press the "Services" button (near the top of the remote).

Select number 4 (System Setup), and then 4 again ("Add Channels").

In the appropriate fields enter the following (you move through the fields using the up and down arrow keys).

In the Frequency field enter: 10.773,

The next three fields are toggle fields, i.e. using the left and right arrows will change the value.

    Toggle Polarisation to : H
    Toggle Symbol Rate to: 22000
    Toggle FEC to : 5/6

Then select the last button - Find Channels.

After a few seconds the channels should appear. The channels on this frequency should be - BBC One England, BBC Two England, BBC News 24, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Three, BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC Radio Cymru.

Use the Yellow button to place a tick beside each one and press "Select". These channels will now be stored.

You can view them by pressing the "Services" button, then 6 ("Other Channels"), use the arrow keys to move to the channel you want and press "Select".

Personally I found American Dad to be fairly unfunny - a smirk or two perhaps. It tried to hard to be biting and satirical, and just flopped on every front. Family Guy it ain't.

    Give 'American Dad' a chance.

But then when it came to seeing one episode of, say, another programme like Joey, Basquille says:

".. wooden characters, bad acting, truly awful jokes, cringeworthy moments! I've a feeling if the show goes ahead, the nephew (actor Paulo Costanso) will be the only one who'll become a star out of it! At least he's got somewhat comic timing."

:P Thus, I think anyone can and should be entitled to make snap judgements... and indeed, as a result, I'm making one about American Dad: i.e. overhyped crap.

Downloaded the first episode. It's okayish. The first episode of Family guy was pretty **** too.

    I like the bit
God is on the phone to Bush then "oh wait, got a call from Cheney, gotta take this." "Yes sir?".
    .

I can't wait for real Family again though. A german goldfish and an overweight alien can never compare to Brian & Stewie :)

American Dad Rocks! That first ep was as good as the average family guy. I'm happy with it.

Cut short as in there's only 18 episodes this season, not 22. As to whether there's a Season 3... no idea yet.

The episode is a pilot. Pilots generally tend to be ****. It's the first attempt, and often things then get changed before the first series is made. I wouldn't judge any series based on a pilot.

Having said that though, I thought it was alright.

For me, American Dad will be its own show. In time, it will prove itself different from Family Guy. Though there are similarities between the shows (come on, Seth created both), but their storyline and characters are different.

I am sure that Seth will be creative and make each show unique, funny, and interesting. I just can't wait for May 1st to turn on Fox and watch my Family Guy and American Dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When compared with Family guy it pales, but on it's own it is a pretty good programme.
