XP Partition Hell

I hope someone can help.. my brother has been having a problem with his PC, since he installed windows onto his SATA D: drive, and used partition magic to change D: to the primary partition, and C: to a logical. Now when trying to load into windows the "non system disk" error is displayed.

This happens even with only one drive connected, the SATA or the IDE. I'm not too up to scratch on how XP even works with partitions, but the MBR has been restored to no avail. Stupid XP installer wont let me edit the boot.ini (no EDIT command). And there is a NTLDR file there too which I don't really understand what it does... I think what I need is something along the lines of a bootable CD which will allow me to change the partitions back? Any ideas?

You could try booting from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gag/ Sometime works where MBR is messed up.

You could use knoppix (live linux cd) to edit the boot.ini file (using the captive NTFS driver).

    Good luck!
