    Hi y'all,

When I install windows xp pro on this IBM Netvista computer it installs fine (no errors) but when it boots the first time it comes up with the white status bar fine and loads through that but when the windows xp logo comes up it is very faint (dimmed) and stalls there. when i reboot it again it shows the status bar but then just a black screen after that and loads no further.

Here are the things i have tried:
reinstalled XP a number of times, Used a 300w psu, tried original 20gb hdd, ran scandisk (low level scan) on both hdds and chkdsk aswell (no probs), removed all pci cards and cdrw drive, tried installing win98 (it installed fine loaded up to the green desktop background colour and stalled), I have reseated the ram but have not tried replacing it yet.

    Computer specs:
    IBM netvista 6578:
Intel P3 933 mhz, 256 sdram, integrated sound and video, 80gb seagate, philips cdrw, some other cd drive, Hipro 155w psu.

There was a 20gb maxtor harddrive (empty) in the machine when he got it and he want it upgraded to 80gb, so this drive is brand new.

Anyone got any ideas or have an idea what the problem is?

    Any advice/info is much appreciated.

I think it's a case of following through on what you're doing already, ie. eliminating possibilities... I'd disable onboard sound and vga in the bios and use an agp/pci video card... at least you can check another two things off the list if nothing else.
Extreme long-shot, but have you tried reseating the cpu aswell?
I'd have a look at your temps/voltages/clocks but I'd think it an unlikely culprit if the OS installers are having zero problems.

It's just interesting where each OS is crashing, XP starts a lot of hardware detection when it reaches the XP logo... I'd say win98 is trying to detect new hardware once it reaches the desktop aswell... so I'd say a hardware device is buggered... smells like crappy onboard vga to me (hunch++).

yeah thats the way i was kinda thinking aswell. I had disabled all usb, sound etc except for vga but will try that monday and see what happens. Thanks for the advice. Anyone with any more advice is much appreciated too.
