    actually my kickboxing instructor who was a 5th dan wado before he gave it up for kickboxing told me back in the 60s when the japs were teaching Wado Ryu for the first time in ireland, that the training was quite rough, and they'd hit you with a bamboo sword to correct your stance etc.

    You either really want to train in what the guy teachs or you don't!
    If your instructor is busting up students on a regular basis is it because he's good or they are crap?
    Sometimes you need to earn a grade, but if he's just busting you up and teaching you nothiong then you need to make a move.
    Our club wound down with five students back a few years, the instructor was hard core but the students were not.....:(

    Man I dont care how "hard core" you want to train, I would NEVER train with a guy who is basically abusing his students. There can be no reason for what this guy is doing. I'd love to see him step into the ring against Fedor... or Waderlai... or CroCop...
