Improving Gnome speed.

Hey I just installed mandrake 10 with gnome, pretty basic install besides gnome.
The speed at which it draws/redraws windows as I open and close them is pretty slow. Any screen effects (like fading out when logging out) causes the mouse to stutter.

I have 3d Accel working for games perfectly. Was playing Quake3 at a few hundred frames. Any reason why gnome wouldn't be using hardware acceleration (or can it even use hardware acceleration)

If you have any gconf tweaks or whatever just post em here :D

Just to note, I have read around and it seems it could be a problem with ATI (I have a 9600 pro) and 2d acceleration. I also have a nforce2 board.

Well I installed KDE, much better. Now I just have to remove X.org and install XFree86 4.4 to get my card working properly.

I'd stick with Xorg, AFAIK there's no advantage to XFree nowadays.

isn't XFree 4.4 the one with the dodgy license that caused most (read "not debian") to change over to XOrg. if you have to go back to XFree probably be best to use XFree 4.3

I got my ATI working in Xorg, so I'm leaving it.

Yep, the ATI 2d acceleration, currently, is not amazing (at least with their proprietary driver). Xorg's own will probably be better, but I don't think it does 3d accel for anything newer than a 9200. ATI are releasing new versions of their driver fairly regularly at the moment tho; you should keep updating. Have you looked at http://rage3d.org/board/forumdisplay.php?f=88? There are lots of tweaks for the driver; something there may help you
    Rob.

I have 3D accel working for the 9600 pro, just did some clever renaming of some files :D

    Quake3 now runs sweet.
