No console(of the recent bunch) has been too similar to it's predecessor for the last while because as Winter's said, Fashion.
But it's also to do with the 'brands' image.

The SNES was quite similar to the NES (ie they were both light grey plastic) and this was blamed for it's 'uncool' image compared to how the public thought of the black, sleek Megadrive. (I'm sure a certain cool hedgehog had something to do with it too)

This was blamed on the fact that since it looked similar to the NES, the image it portrayed was that it wasn't that much more advanced than the NES. Whereas the Megadrive 'looked' very different so it must be better.

As a result, up to now companies have always completely redesigned the new iteration of their console systems, changing the name, colour, styling, image, 'possibilities' etc...

Except Sony went against the grain with keeping the PS brand for the PS2, and now it looks as if M$ will make their XB followup green AND keep the X* name.

So ... I'm not too sure if I made my point, but Works over and I'm going home! byebye:)

I can see it looking a lot like the size of the xbox for the reason that it needs a motherboard the graphics and of course the infamous Cell and if it needs a heatsink it will definately need to be that size. Hasn't been confirmed yet but might need a hard drive in there too. Then they have a lot more possiblilities such as if they wanted 5.1 and of course a modem / ethernet for online gaming. I think this will weigh about that of a xbox maybe more. No matter what I can see it being the best console ever. 4.6ghz Cell processor. New nvidia graphics. I would buy it right now without even seeing it. Online play should be amazing. I'd say this will sell twice as much as the PS2 because it will be cutting edge and i never felt on previous playstation they ever pushed the envelope. Like look at the XBOX great piece of kit graphics are great slow as hell though needs more ram PS2 you could really see the graphics difference but I think it will take XBOX a XBOX3 to beat the PS3.

I don't think it will weigh as much as an Xbox, though I could believe the size will be the same. Sony has always amazed people whether it be good or bad, so you never know it could be just as heavy and/or be the same size as the PS2 just different look.
