Jaguar MkX and 420G

Anyone here like these? Better still, does anyone own one :) For those who don't know it's a super luxurious Jaguar saloon from the 60s which is fitted with the exact same suspension and engine as an E-type. It is bigger, better and more advanced than the Jaguar Mk2, yet is a lot cheaper to acquire these days.

I have only ever seen one on the roads in this country. It was a brown one which was parked along a road in Killiney. I distinctly remember it seemed to stick out about a foot more into the road than the cars parked near it. These cars are HUGE especially in terms of width. Legend has it that this is the second widest British car ever made, with the widest being the Jaguar XJ220 (which I know is well over 7 feet wide)

Mk10 The Jag I always thought.

The blaggers Jag "Guv, they're gonna get away from us in that thing...etc" :D

I did see one somewhere, it might have been in Clonmel just by Superquinn, there's a Classic Transport Museum or somesuch and often you'll see a classic car on the atrium outside*.

*note to self take some pix next time I'm there.

It doesn't look nowhere near 7' to me, probably not even 6'

    I'm probably wrong :)

These cars are big! Not as wide as your average yank tank, but to European standards there weren't may cars that would beat the MkX/420G in width:

    Original spec is
    Length: 513 cm = 16,83 feet
    Width: 194 cm = 6,36 feet
    Height: 139 cm = 4,56 feet

So if you were thinking of getting one of these, better measure up your garage first !!!! :D

big big big, but they actually handle...

rust though...ooooh rust kills them dead, more dead than domestos!!!

Yes a sweet car. Always seemed to lve in the shadow of the Mark 2. I still find the a bit creepy looking, maybe its the slight forward slant of the front end, a bit shark like or something. I knew a guy who had one, rusted badly and he swapped it for a Cadillac..........talk about taste......or rather the lack of it !

The first time I saw one, some late night show on TV, like Tales of the Unexpected or something, it was wafting along in the dark and Ii thought it was an XJ6 and that there was something wrong with our telly !!

I thought it was distorting the image ! it was only a few years later the penny dropped !

As a totally sperate issue, a tangent if you will, does anyone know what year "Top Trumps" the car editions came out ? Mid 70's sometime? I recently saw them in one of the airports but hadn't time to look. Just curious if there was a "Classic Cars" version. i leaned a lot from those cards ! :D

Big enough for a car that age! Comparable in size to long versions of the current 7-series or previous S-class

I used to know a guy in Balbriggan that had one and used it as a daily driver (420G - think he still does, haven't seen him for years). They are great for the money and beautiful inside.

I remember seeing one in a Jag dealership when about 15 years ago that was absolutely mint and fell in love with them there and then!

Theres one in a shed in Drimoleague in west Cork, its complete but need a fair bit of work. I have photos on my phone if I can figure out how to download them onto my computer. The reg is 666 something, but it is a Tipperary one. I wouldn't think its worth restoring as you can buy them quite cheaply in the U.K. If anyone wants more info. let me know.

AZU222 was repainted very badly in red and then the banger racers got a hold of it.
I'm not sure if it was ever raced.

Great looking cars and I agree with the sinister looking theory, especially in black. A word of caution though, these have been in banger money territory for years and it stands to reason the maintenance could also have been skimped on. The cost of restoration will far outweigh the value of the finished car.

I think they're cool. There's a green one down the road from me in Monkstown, it's far from pristine but it looks to be in daily use.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is currently selling a 420, that they got professionally restored at great expense over many months for a long series of articles in their magazines. Rumour has it that it is going to go for well under the money that was spent on it. Probably the best buy this side of the millennium...

    Check it out here: http://www.jec.org.uk/jec-new/index.php

BTW, I believe I have seen one rusting away on the old N1 north of Dublin.

I can't see it in that link?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭superboy

Is it a 420 or a 420G???? dont get confused!!! the 420G was the updated MkX and the 420 was a development of the S-type. two very different cars!!!

Photos as promised..........better late than never I suppose. Sorry about the picture quality.

Oh yeah junkyard!! I forgot all about that car (monies had to be diverted to other things at the time i enquired about it before). Is it still available?

........I saw that. I think there is a workshop/bodyshop just there and that Jag was a project. I saw a lovely, but rusty, Fiat 130 Coupe in the same spot about 4 years back !

    Never saw it again !

junkyard have you any details for that car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭G Luxel

I think it was the widest car in Britain when it first appeared in 1961 (same time as the E-type) to replace the ancient Mk 9. It was built up to 1970 and also as a Daimler and its platform forms the basis for the Daimler DS 420 limousine (1968-1992).

Are you sure of these facts very sad as she was a lovely example, i remember her well light sky blue with factory webasto sunroof in body colour with electric windows. it was knocked parking it in the garage years back and could not get a 420g grill and landed up with the mk10 one. g had a thick chromed center piece where the mk10 were all same slaints. would really like to know more.
    thank you for your reply
