Check that automatic updating is turned off, it could be scanning your pc and the MS site to see what updates you need. I don't have XP in front of me to check how it's done but it's there somewhere in the control panel.

i never had that probelm before and i've always had it turned on!! its not that its slow jsut no program will oepn for about 5 minutes and then everything i've clicked opens at once. its pentium 4, 3.4Ghz with Gig of RAM isnt exactly a slouch (yet) so just annoyed me about this 'pause' once conected to the internet.

P.s. after everything opens at once its fine all systems go.....

I've found that usuall problems like this have been caused by one of the Norton products Usually Firewall/ antivirus. I've lost count the amount of times windows loads fairly quickly after a clean install only for me to go installing Norton Internet security and sitting there for 2-3 minutes before the machine actually responds after booting up.

Turn off windows firewall - it is the enemy within
Use ZoneAlarm - it is the friend within :)

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete before you dial up. Go to the processes tab and click on the CPU column so that the higest usage comes up at the top. Tell us what the process name is that is at the top when you're just after connecting.
