There are lots of crap and boring cars out there. But do any of you find you hanker after some of them?

I have a strange attraction to early 90's Peugeot 309 in white specifically :)

........I know a guy who has one, he bought it new in '81 and still has it. He's restoring it so it will appear at some future show, a nice blue metallic one !

    I love those SD1 Rovers too !

I used to love those Mk2 Granadas the 2.8i Ghia, just a really well equiped and well finished car. Thye fact that we had a Main Ford dealer in the village, with all the high end models prominently on display obviously sunk in deep. Loved the Mk2 RS2000 aswell !

As far as odd cars go I suppose I was fascinated for a while by the Austin 1800's (landcrab) just because it was so ungainly and unnatractive I couldn't figure out why it got off the drawing board let alone why folk bought them. Same for the Maxi. The Princess was another one that took my curiosity. Our neighbour had one and he thought it was the biz.........we just laughed at him from our Datsun Laurel !! :O

I'd just liek a tidy R4... the good old "my father used to have one of them" type syndrom...actua,ly I think both my father and grandfather had them at teh same time...

Mr Merc - let me know when he's done will ya, I'd love to have a nose about, didnt the gardai get a dozen of them in the 80s as persuit cars.... and they were all written off!!!

Rover SD1 for me too. My neighbour has one in his "collection" (rich fecker) it's gold with gold alloys, obv 3.5L V8. I've wanted it since I was a kid. It must be in his garage for at least 20 years, it's in the same condition it was when it came off the production line.
Very dated inside, as you can see here, but I'm still hoping he'll one day sell it to me ;)

I'm with Papa Hoff on this one, a DeLorean would have a special place in my heart.

Not quite a car, but I'll stick with my oddest desire; a Scammell tractor unit, ideally a Constructor.

Totally agree on the Renault 4 van, actually had one once ...my first car. So I'd be even more "itchy" to get my hands on a 2CV van, they got that cool corrugated iron look. Or, even better ...a citroen HY van. A corrugated iron shed on wheels.

............Yeah I heard that ! You should see it at the shows, not sure if he'll be finished this year though.

Those SD1's had a symetrical dash where they could easily swop from RHD to LHD at production stage by only changing a few components !

Ahh the Fiat 130 coupe ! Fantastic looking car. If ever there was a car that deserved independant branding status ala Lexus/Toyota that was it. It would've made the difference. There were 2 of them where I lived, late 70's early 80's, a beautiful metallic blue one and a hideous beige coloured one!

Great sound from the above cars. in fact I think my love for cars stemmed from picking out the nicer sounding ones from the more mundane 4 cylinder ones, hence the Rover V8's, S-Classes, Granada Ghia's, Jaguars etc......

Just remembered what I thought were the coolest when I was younger...

    An Audi 200 Avant.

You could fit a medium sized ocean liner in the back, too :D

I agree, and there's also nothing odd with liking a Frazer Nash, Fiat 130, Rover SD1 Vitesse etc. So to get the thread back on topic here's some pics of a vehicle that I admit to having a bit of a hankering for :)

Oh dear lord, first the Megane and now this. Print this page, bring it to your doctor and get some strong pills that will rid you of this affliction ;) Do you remember when the gardai drove Avengers - faster than a speeding forklift...

Volvo 262 Bertone. I've only seen one in Ireland and it was L.H.D. but they're all over the place in Sweden. (I love Volvo's)

    A Volvo made in Italy.
They look a little too much like a custom chop-top for me, but they're supposed to be a lovely car to drive.

Well, I've a Volvo 1800ES, and once you get past the heavy steering at low speed, it's a great cruiser/GT.

    Well now you have :D

Volvo's are very comfortable cars and are usually well loaded with spec.
If you're after an exciting drive however, try the 850 T5. 240bhp, stiffened and lowered suspension, 0-60 7secs and all in the comfort and safety of a Volvo.

Oh ya, one day I'd like to have a modified Morris Minor like this:

while we're on the subject of Volvo's and Bertone, just like to mention that they worked together on another car more recently (86-91): the Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe

For those of you that don't have a clue what I'm talking about, here it is:

    Volvo780Bertone_1.jpg

    Volvo780Bertone_2.jpg

At least it's better proportioned than the 262C...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,769 ✭✭✭eljono

Hmm... that's nice. It looks a bit like an Maserati Ghibli from the side. I'd still prefer the 262 though, it's such a lump of a car you've got to love it.

262! No Volvo saloon prior to the 850 looks decent. The Bertone designed coupe looks like a Masa 222 shirley?

Well okay I'm sure the P1800 and the Amazon are decent drivers/cruisers etc I accept that but I really meant that I've never heard anyone saying a modern Volvo is good to drive. I've driven T5's, very fast, but still not nice to drive, too much torque steer. great noise though !

I agree that newer one looks very Maserati like ! Were they sold in Europe ?

Actually the Italian market has some lovely cars that we never saw over here, the Lancia Kappa Coupe for example and the Alfa 164 2.0 V6 Turbo !

And some pretty minging ones too. The Lancia Thesis must compete with the Ford Scorpio as ugliest face on a big saloon. The rear lights are nice though. Most of them seem to have been bought by Italian local government officials, as far as I could tell.

Cool, I never knew Alfa made a turbo'ed 164. My Dad took me for a drive in a 164 3.0 V6 when I was about 12 and I can still remember the noise. It was unbelievbly beautiful and pure.... Sadly though that engine is now coming to an end :(

I aggree about the 850. Owned a GLT estate for years but although roadholding and cornering was ok, felt they were hopelessly underpowered! But it was the only estate that I liked the looks of at the time, and since I couldn't afford a T5 I just lived with it.

I think the symetry of the Volvo actually works better than the Maserati's with their stumped tail and slightly awkward noses...
They were sold all over the world from, from 1987-1991, but they were never a major success. They're now starting to become quite collectable and have their own Cult following. There was even a Turbo version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Yeah a lot of the current Lancias have that "retro" nose like the Aurelia and it just doesn't work !!

When I was last in Italy all the "official" cars and a lot of the hotel limo's were the big 164's and those big Lancias, all black, all spotless and all driven by wannabee male models with the high collar shirts, Gucci sun glasses and loafers. Most stayed in the car window up and aircon on. Pretty cool job !!

Nice to see other people like the sd1, and when they are 30 I will get one. The other cars i sorta think about owning and then shudder, are the renault 30, and Fuego. It's amazing how some mass built cars just dissappeared without trace. Also yes the fiat 130 coupe stunning, and any mk1 or 2 granada. Lets not forget the opel senator. However more recently I have a dolly sprint on my mind, there is one for sale here, Looking for 10 grand, Laugh ? I almost went to Guatamal!!!!

True, there are so many cars from the seventies and eighties that were once common but are now virtually extinct. Having said that, I saw a Renault 20 (with old Irish reg) at the American car show last september. It wasn't part of the show or anything, it was just in the car park. First time I'd seen one of those cars in at least 10 years.

my god what a sight an original reno 20, amazing. what happened all the 128's and 124's there was like thousands of them here once. The streets of dublin wer'e once covered in Cortina's where did they go. I guess rust is a huge bottom line.
