Who fills in the form of transfer of ownership? its the original owner is it? he then sends it to the revenue or whoever and they send out a new form?

Is that right or do i need to send in a form aswell?

The orgininal owner fills it out and the new owner fillins in their details and signs it and the orig owner sends it to Mayo or somehwere, indicated on the form.

The new owner then gets a new form indicating their ownership.

I am open to correction but that is how it worked when I bought my car last year.

That's how it worked for me about 6 weeks ago. NOTE: this was for a 1989 car - there are different rules for post 1993 cars.

You send off the form with the logbook for the old car, the Department updates it and sends it to the new owner using the details he filled in on your form.

    G'luck.

No need for log book as its post 93.

If you are buying then you fill out your details and the seller has to sign it somwhere and has some details to fill out.

It's pretty simple when you see the form as it explains it all.

its a very old thread, so I dont feel too guilty posting an only-just-related question here.

My wife got a new car the other day, and I took her old car. Should I officially transfer ownership of her old car to me? I dont want to if I dont have to, as it will mean another 'previous owner' on the records if I go so sell it or trade it in later.

I have transfered my insurance from my old car to this one , so is there an issue here if I am the prime driver on a car that is not in my name?

Check the small print in the insurance cert, it usually states that the car must be in your name or that of your spouse, so you are probably covered. They might be different between insurance companies though.

It depends on how many previous owners had this car before your wife. If there is loads then I don't see it as an issue.
If it were me i would photocopy the reg cert now and then send it off to change ownership.
That way you will be able to show any future prospective buyers that the last two owners were spouses and the change of ownership was simply a formality.
Also , while your insurance company will probably not worry too much about it, when you go to renew the Motor Tax technically the named owner should have a policy in force.....I said technically, so people please lets not start a long night of "it doesn't matter what you put on the renewal form, they never check it"

I usually ask the buyer to show his/her licence when I'm selling, just to make sure things match.
