Problem with Gigabyte Motherboard

i was fixing a PC for a friend of mine a Packard Bell one.
The Hard drive was gone, so i replaced it with a new 80gb IDE drive.

The Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA 8SIML board. The problem is that the BIOS only picks up the hard drive at random. sometimes you boot and it detects it, other times it thinks it's not connected. The cable is in securely and i have tried other cables. The hard drive works perfectly as i have tried it in two other machines. I flashed the BIOS also to see if that would help but still the same problem.

Sometimes even when the hard drive is detected on startup. it still won't boot to XP.

I have tried it also on the secondary IDE controller and seems more reliable. but thats more of a quick fix then a permanent solution.

    Any suggestions?

whats the psu in the pc like?is there enough juice to get the hard drive spinning up fast enough?
just wondering cus i had the same problem when i built my pc and a new psu did the trick.

did you put many new parts in it?

apart from that i dont think im much help tbh

The only upgrade was from a 40GB HD to an 80GB HD.
I have tried it with nothing else in the machine but the same result. The PSU should have enough power for that.

I had a prob like thi slast year ...
Is the hard drive a Seagate 7.7200 barracuda ???

I had a seemingly dead one which had the same symtoms ...

What I did was put it in the freezer for about an hour ... no kidding .
It has worked in my mates machine now since without problems..

See the trick is that the expansion / contraction of the freeze just allows the read arms in the drive to become unstuck ..

Don t try this if you are squeemish ,,, and certainly dont come looking for me if all you get out of it is a silent metal brick .

it's not the HD it's a problem with the motherboard detecting the Hard drives. i have also put other hard drives into this box and still the same problem.

the BIOS seems to freeze for about 20-30secs when it is trying to detect the hard drives. then sometimes it detects it sometimes not. but always a long delay.
