check and uncheck a folder so you can choose to not let files or folders be moved/deleted/edited and then if you need to edit something or delete etc you can simply un-check it and it will allow you to?

What does the "read-only" option do? It was checked in a grey colour in the folder I am talking about but you can still edit/delete/move files. I am afraid to click apply with the check black instead of grey incase I can't get back to the grey check whatever that's about.

    Thanks!

    what OS?
surely the security tab (XP) would cover this?
if not then you would probably need to browse your files with something other than explorer..imho..im just guessing.

If you set the file as read only then you won't be able to edit it and it will give a warning if you try and delete it. The grey that you're talking about means that some of the files in the folder are read only and some aren't.

    Ok thanks for that:)

However, do I have to set EACH individual file to read only for it to give such warnings? Basically I just want a browser with no other options other than to open the file. And be able to edit/delete/move the files when I need to!
    Thanks

I thought I knew the answer to this one but it turns out I didn't, however I found this on support.microsoft.com, should help -

This might help too, gives an overview of different groups -
