I think I read somewhere that 16x is the theoretical max DVDs can go to. I think it's the max read speed aswell.

I never get more than 7x or 8x on my Pioneer 108 or my NEC 3520A. I don't know of anyone who has ever managed to write a DVD in less than 8 minutes and I doubt it's even possible. Are there any 16x rated DVDRs available yet?

If by on the fly you mean copying from one disc to another without taking an image then I wouldn't recommend it. Most reliable method is to take an image and then write that back to a blank. Copying on the fly will be slow if both drives are on the one IDE controller, master/slave style. It may not be any better if they are on seperate controllers either though.

yeah i sell them 16 speed dvd plus verbatium,
    but there 4 euro each
im sure they will go down when they have been in production a little longer.

i only recomend 4 speed on the fly ie... disc to disc .....
other wise use dvd decrypter up to what ever speed you like write as an iso.
    or mds.

like most things the burning speed is mostly marketing rubbish.

if its 16x, it means that under ideal conditions, with the correct disk it MAY burn at that speed at CERTAIN PARTS OF THE DISK.

id love to know what is so resource intensive about burning disks though:

under 2k, usung nero with ASPI installed the cpu is around 70% utilistaion. 1gb ram, 2500+ CPU 7200Rpm HD.

Souper: The problem with burning is getting the laser over the pit for long enough to accurately melt (or not) that pit at speed. It really is an amazing technology though. For the average (full) DVD, you're looking at around 18 billion accurately lasered pits in a few minutes. Class.

Littlejay: You can only do a disc to dics backup on dvd's that are unencrypted (i.e. previously ripped, or non-video). If you intend doing a disc to disc backup, make sure the disc you're reading from is clean. If there's a serious read error at any point you've got a coaster on your hands, otherwise it's a fine way of saving a bit of time.

I have a 16x reader and have hit speeds of around 12x reading, but /only/ on single layer printed (i.e. not burned) media. A rare example of this is the UT2K4 dvd. Blistering. I would say that for safe disc to disc, the highest I would go is 4x. Just my tuppence though. Nero has speed testing tools if you want to push the limits.

<edit> I didn't try backup on the UT2K4 dvd....that 12x speed was at install time. Not sure that it would back up sucessfully....may have some kind of copy protection </edit>

Disks now run at constant rpm's so it's the very end of the disk that has the highest speed, the start of the disk is of course the slowest. Also does not take into account setup time or verify time, think downhill with the wind behind you..
