I think this came up before, and there wasn't, or at least none was mentioned. I'd be kind of interested in one too if there was one. If not I wonder if there'd be enough interest on the forum here to get one going ?

I'd be interested, probably moving to Dublin in June.

What do you mean by a development circle ?
What goals would it have or do they have?
What skills would they work on ?
and what ethics or rules would thier be ?

I've been involved in online development circles, can't say I would highly recommend them, (there are a lot of headwreckers about)
This group here is as close to being a development group as you will get, There is no "leader" and everyone is equal in their own right. People generally have their own experiences and find they develop at their own pace, having a group is just about comming together with likeminded people to share in those things, and to know your not alone on your journey.
Reading and journaling, meditating, all those things you can do in the comfort of your own home and in your own time.
Sharing your experiences with people who may understand or have experienced themselves is reasurring.

I guess this wouldn't be as much of a problem in a real world group, I don't see many people bothering to actually go somewhere just to be an annoyance.

From what your saying though these groups are more like some kind of social club where people just sit around chatting, or one of those womens support groups where everybody tells each other how great they are. Not really something where people actually do or learn very much. Would that be right ?

yep, thats how I see it anyway.

wait..you can learn loads just by being around people who have similar experiences, I know some online groups do various excercises, like using pendulums or teaching tarot and what not, but I think you are your own best teacher, sometimes we just need to know that we are not alone in our experiences.
You can talk about how great you are if you like :)...if people find they are in such a situation, it's one of two things, a superiority complex on one behalf or an inferiority complex on anothers part..and all these thing can be overcome just by being in a group of understanding.

<OT>does anyone know where the paganism forum went?

just found it in soc under the broader scheme of religion/spirituality :)

Well, it is my favourite subject, and it's so hard to find an appropriate forum for it these days ... ;)

What I mean though is that I'd be worried it would just be a thing where someone stands up and says 'I <blah><blah><blah>' and everyone would clap and tell them how 'special' they are.

I thought a development circle was to assist in your spiritual or psychic development depending on the focus of the group. I would understand it to involve definite exercises in meditation, or psychic abilities such as clairvoyance. I wouldnt see it as simply a forum where we would all say how wonderful we are ;) but we can do that too if you want :D

Thats why I felt it would need a strong leader, who knows what they are doing and can keep the group focused and on a pure motive.

steven..have I told you lately that I love you? Your such a wonderful being I'm soo glad I have been able to meet you, you just light up my life. You're great!!

katie, I understand what your referring to, there are heaps of those kinds of development groups online where you can learn how to develop your skills, but as this is a message board (and not java or irc) it would be difficult to perform those kind of "classes".. although not totally impossible.
The whole leader thing would make me run a mile tbh, I have always been warned against gurus, and generally find them to be full of sh*t.
I would be something of a solitaire and could never be forced to take direction (in fact I would probably do the exact opposite) but I do find direction though, through others words and actions. (when it's not forced) I learn by example. I think thats possible within this group.
*there are some natural leaders/teachers out there, you'll know them when you see them.

know this one? "Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend."

When all this stuff started happening with me a smart man told me never to let anyone 'teach' me anything. Thats been my rule of thumb ever since. At the moment tho, Im a bit 'stuck' and thats originally why I came here, to see if I could progress thru talking to others.

I refer to a leader not as a holier than thou font of knowledge, but as a less intrusive person, who can guide and keep things on track, not dictate. From working in groups in other fields someone like this is helpful, as it stops some of the more strident members trying to 'run' the group. Thats my experience anyway.

yes you too are a wonderful being of light, stand up there now in front of us all so we can pat you on head.
Katie, maybe you could initiate some sort of excercise, give us an idea of what direction you would like to go.

    Awww, thanks..

    ... hey, wait a minute .....

.... anyway, like Katie I would have thought such a group would need to be led, but more in the sense that a chairman would lead a meeting. Just to keep it organised and focused, not really to tell people what to do or think. It could even be a different person each time if needs be.

I think the mods are there to keep things in line, other than that I think thead and tallesien (sp) are experienced in the field and can keep an eye on us and mke sure we are acting like responsible individuals??

Katie I know your interested in mediumship, I have some experience in the field although I haven't been involved in quite some time, if you want to get something going in that direction feel free. I offer myself as a willing giunea pig..if you want to try and pick up some information..but be gentle ok?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

I dunno if that will work..I don't want it to seem like I'm trying to get you ro prove yourself to me and as it stands it's something which is much easier to do via java or irc.

I know there are lots of excercises that we can do via message board like remote viewing excercises and meditations, learning about symbolism etc...maybe it would be an idea if we each went off and found an item which we could discuss and use as an excercise.?

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

All very interesting, happy to participate. Do you mean get something meaningful to discuss or 'what am I holding in my hand' kind of thing. Ive seen other exercises run on boards like this which go along the lines of: favourite food, occupation, number of siblings etc. Kind of a psychic guessing game. Phlematic set up something similar recently.

Thanks for the guinea pig offer would love to try, but could be setting myself up for a big fall. :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

k, sounds like a good idea..I'm not very good at guessing games though, I'm usually at my best when I'm not trying, but I would be interested in seeing how it develops.
If you could outline the aims of the excercise in a seperate thread we could all have a go. (if thats ok with mods)

as far as the guinea pig thing, don't worry about it, but if you do pick up on something don't be afraid to let me know. (names etc..) I'm good with names (used to be anyway) but I understand it is much more difficult to do via message board anyhow.

I'm seeing java and irc being mentioned, is an offline group off the table ? I suppose it would be pretty awkward, I'd guess that there's people from all over the country on the board, but I think it would be a bit more productive.

<edit> And Katie, feel free to use me as a guinea pig too, just let me know if anything interesting turns up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

might be an idea at some stage.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Would prefer it tbh, cant work well here. As long as you dont say donegal or westport etc, id travel nearly anywhere.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Actually thinking about it more, it'd be hard to get somewhere to meet up too. The only places we could do it in would be pubs, which might not be the best environment for it. Altough in the summer we could all meet up in one of the parks, that way even if nothing else happens we could always fake a few crop circles.

aren't you the computer whizz? Java would be nice.

Well if a "computer whizz" thinks that doing it in real life would be better, what does that tell you ? ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

that your too lazy to sort out a chatroom?

    just kidding

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Good answer, I would have also accepted:
"It's time to find a new computer whiz" :)

If we're going to go that route, I'm sure there's already plenty of places we could do it, no point in reinventing the wheel.

Looks interesting (as long as I don't get caught up in any grammatial arguments).

I've been meaning to post on the paganism boad but haven't really had the time, and all my time this morning has been sucked up trying to guess what you were thinking, what Katie's favourite food is and most importantly what you think I was up to last night :)

From what I understand, development circles are when spiritually minded people come together to have a meeting approx once a week, there is no leader, someone who just opens the meeting. Many start off with music, Meditation etc and usually a light hearted discussion following. Discussion usually entails conversations about what people thought of during meditation or past pyschic experiences - it is not a serious thing, just lighthearted conversation with people who wish to develop and learn from others. I suppose it would depend on how mature and how much of an ego individuals have in the group has but lifes too short, we are here for a good time not a long time. The ideal location is supposed to be somewhere quiet.

Saying that a spiritually minded group meeting in a pub (without meditation etc.) would be good too! Any excuse for a beer! hmmmm beer...............

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

    good to meet you sandy.
I think this thread has sort of validated a few peoples needs and we're doing our best to try and meet them here within these forums, so feel free to join in.
I too like beer occasionally and with the summer comming up I'll keep my diary open..just in case.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Hmmm, beer makes another good argument against java, it tends to interfere with the typing skills :)

Looking into this more, it looks really good, it should be a bit of fun if nothing else. I'll have to look into getting a ticket. Are you going to it too ?

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Sounds interesting, is it anything like the Mind Body Spirit Festival on in the RDS 17-20th March? Was at that before, its pretty good, if a little bit 'sell, sell, sell'.

You know, this sounds a lot like the spiritualist churches over here... Of course, I haven't been to one, as I haven't had the time to yet... I'll eventually go to see what it's about, but I dunno if I'd go regularly...
