We did this from Shanghai to Hong Kong a couple of years back.
Very good way to see the country - but I'd advise paying to get a soft sleeper or hard sleeper....and get one of them "Packsafe" net thinks to keep people out of your backpack while you're asleep.

Watch out for the RAPE conductors. They only accept RAPE dollars. :(

Didn't travel between HK and Shanghai but travelled on other 3rd class trains overnight in China. 12 hours was the max I did, it takes 24 hours to get from Shanghai to HK which would be hard going even in a soft sleeper. Ifyou really want to do it take your own drink and food. The trains that do this route are very nice and make sure when you get to Shanghai to take a trip on the Maglev train.

We took a flight from Shanghai to Shenzhen (then get the metro into HK) which is way cheaper than flying into HK.

I would thouroughly recommend if you are in this part of China to take a few days out to visit Yangshou (do a google search for images).
