I was doing some digging around, trying to get some material to explain to me what kind of amoeba opposes the building of an incinerator and at the same time burns their household waste, as there were reports in our local paper of sales of metal bins with chimney’s increasing. I came across this.

I sort of have that feeling that, if the Swiss need to go all Big Brother to make sure you don’t do home incineration, that its essential that we set up an environmental Thought Police here.

“Too much of us are still in this day and age burning our waste, yet if an incinerator was to open up next door to us we would be up in arms. It is illegal to burn household waste at home. What comes out of your chimney could be harming both you, your children and your neighbours without you realising it. In Switzerland homes have sensors fitted to their chimneys so that any traces of the noxious gases produced from burning plastics and other household waste can be detected. Hopefully we will never have to resort to such draconian measures in Ireland.”

And while we’re on the subject, are these people gob****es or what? Are people really so devoid of personal responsibility that they’d just dump their waste wherever it takes their fancy?

Household waste 'being dumped on large scale'

MAJOR illegal dumping of household refuse is taking place in Co Kerry, a county councillor has claimed.
This is despite the use of helicopters by the council, at a cost of more than €1,000 an hour, to detect illegal dumps, said Brendan Cronin (Ind).
There have also been incidents of illegal car dumping in and around the Killarney National Park. Following a tip-off, Mr Cronin uncovered two large dumps, containing beds, bottles, cans, and household rubbish apparently dumped there on a regular basis. One of the dumps contains up to 15 tonnes of rubbish, it is estimated.
Councillors claim hundreds of customers have signed up with private operators, rather than comply with the council's new refuse regulations which ask householders to segregate dry recyclables.

Pathetic. It takes just a bit of effort to recycle. So people are making their own "dump"... why doesn't the government just open a new dump in that area, the residents can't possibly object.. actually they deserve it.

As for the burning, a member of my family does that, and it drives both myself and my OH crazy. We're going to offer to take her stuff and recycle it for her as she has no car to get to the facility.
