    Hello everyone,

I’m a Canadian woman travelling to Ireland at the beginning of May. You see I had an epiphany in early January: You only live once!! So with out much thought I booked my flight. I booked a one way, but I only plan on staying until September. I am a student.

I’m actually beginning to worry. I’m not sure how things are going to work out. I’ll literally get off the plane and have nowhere to go!! I’ve been looking for work in Ireland over the internet (somewhere that will provide accommodation), and I can’t seem to get employers to notice me. I realize that it is best to target the hotel industry for employment, but even agriculture would be awesome. I’d rather work outside. I completed a veterinary technician program in college so I am skilled in animal care. I am a biology student and I have general knowledge of plants as a human resource. I also have working experience with birds. But it really doesn’t matter. I just need a job and it would be awesome if accommodations were provided. I am an Irish citizen but I’m not sure what other types of documentation I will need in order to work. I’ve heard something about a PPS number. Apparently, I have to wait until I am employed before I can apply for that.

Also, I would like to meet some kind folks. I’m 24. Not really into drinking or bars, I prefer nature stuff. So yeah, that’s it. My mom doesn’t want me to go. She keeps telling me that she is from ‘the bog’ “Do you know why they call it the bog? Cuz there’s nothing there!” Ha ha!! Oh she makes me laugh :)

I’d love it if people would just lend some advice. I’m not set on any particular area of Ireland, anywhere is fine.

    Thanks

Would you be interested in going somewhere rural or urban? I wouldn't really recommend any of the bigger towns and cities (judging by your interests anyway), it seems you'd be more accustomed to country life. Finding a job in Ireland really isn't too difficult, you may have to work for lower wages for a while, but you should find something suitable within a short period of time. There's plenty of people on here to help you if you want to get more specific, with places, particular jobs or areas of legislation or administration.

Boards tends to have people from all walks of life, lurking in the shadows, waiting to help people like yourself!

    For work try:

    Hotel Jobs
    Jobs.ie
    Employment Ireland
    IrishJobs.ie
    Nixers
    Recruit Ireland

    For temporary accomidation try:
    Daft.ie

Don't worry, you'll also find plenty of things in the bog...especially a public one ;) (You'll get that after you spend a bit of time here)

Those are just a few sites off hand...im sure more people will add to it....

Good Luck :) Enjoy your stay.

    {edit} Also, bring all relevant documentation of your Irish citizenship with you, and you'll have no problem with employment laws etc. Your first emplorey will organise your pps for you.{/edit}

Fairly sure if you're a holder of the passport you can get a PPS number.
Failing that I will employ you illegally as a cleaner - but fairly sure what I can pay you (min wage) will not pay for psychotherapy  (you would definitely need if you really had to clean my aparment!):p
I've had the itch myself and done it. My findings were the happiest ex-pats on Earth were the Canadians (TO and east some west). If I was Canadian and had links there this is where I'd go. I have returned here and it is a love-hate relationship with the country. This was Bermuda.
Also, I would like to meet some kind folks. I’m 24. Not really into drinking or bars, I prefer nature stuff. So yeah, that’s it. My mom doesn’t want me to go. My Mom didn't want me to go either. I Insisted. We are still good friends. If I hadn't - might nor be talking to her! You have to do what you think you want to do! Parental holdback on this will only lead to depression/resentment - you already know this!

Its a bog 'coz all business is protectionist - might as well be run by the sopranos!

You see I had an epiphany in early January: You only live once!!
Whats an epiphany? Dictionary.com mentioned something about a "Christian feast celebrating the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus", which to me means sod all.

As for the bog bit, there's alot of boggers here :p

Also, try to land job before you get here, or at least a few interviews. Goto here for a nice list of jobsites. Then, sign up in one or two (or all of them), and see what happens.
I am an Irish citizen but I’m not sure what other types of documentation I will need in order to work. I’ve heard something about a PPS number.
If your an Irish Citizen, you should already have a PPS number. A PPS number is your tax number. You need this when starting a job. If you don't have one, but your an Irish Citizen, you should look @ revenue.ie for some info on how to get yours.

    =-=

Anyhoo's, I'm sure someone by the time I answer this, there'll be other replies, with more info.

    Slang N-Z

This is great!! Thank you everyone. I'll be sure to keep you all posted :)

    http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/dictionaryhome.aspx

    defines an epiphany as...

    1. appearance of a god: the manifestation of a divine being

    2. sudden realization: a sudden intuitive leap of understanding, especially through an ordinary but striking occurrence

sounds to me like your best bet would be to check out stud farms around the country, i don't have any links but just google irish studfarms and sommething decent should come up. there are so many in the country and some of the best are in Kildare, close to Dublin if you ever want to check out the city

You can't expect anyone to provide you with accommodation these days, although some hotels and farms might.

Remember we don't tip very well.

Consider looking at vets, etc. under www.goldenpages.ie

youre a student looking for part time work in a foreign country.

you wont get anything decent or permanent, because you are not worth training up.
look at temping agencies if you are ina city. in a more rural situation, i have no idea what you can do.

make sure you have enough money to book a flight home. you may need it sooner than you think. be realistic about your stay in ireland.
