The Geforce FX 5200 is possibly the worst card you could get if you wanna play the latest games like Half Life 2 and Counter Strike: Source.

Trust me I know, I have one :P It'll play them fine at medium but will start to stutter if you put it anything above that. Also bit of advice, don't turn on any anti ailiasing or anisotropic filtering as this will severly impact on the performance of the card. Make sure too that your motherboard's bios is set to run the card at 8x as this will speed up the card.

    Hope some of this helps.

Chances are that youre now running in DirectX 8.1 instead of DirectX 7 on your previous card. This means that your graphics will be better even if framerates arent. Medium is the best you can hope for with that card, I think my friend runs his 800x600 at medium everything and it's not even nearly playable in my opinion. Try getting DNA drivers for it, when you install them select the INSANE FPS install option. Should give you a nice fps boost.

Thanks, but i could actually play on high level, in CSS, but my ping would take 10 mins to cool down lol. Im annoyed at so little difference the new card has made, considering it was replacing a 64mb PCI card...

BTW how do i check to see what speed the bios has agp running at, the only options i see, are agp aperiture, or somthing, and boot to agp! Any help appriciated. PS, for the same money and maybe a bit more 150 euros maybe, can you tell me my best option for a graphics card, cos im thinking of taking this back.

    Tks

    5900 maybe

The will be no difference between 4x and 8x so don't worry about that.

When looking at a new card the amount of memory does not make it a faster card. The difference between the same card with 128mb or 256mb would be negligable.

If possible you should try and return the card and get at least a 9600, it should be less than €100.

its a really slow card bring it back and get 9600 or run at 640by 480 resolution with highdetail graphics if shop wont take it back, knock off aa and vsync shadows and sky detail, ask shop 4 credit note and use it to buy 9600 ,its unlikely they,ll give u cashrefund, cos card is not faulty, just badly designed.theres some crap 128meg cards out there ,its up to buyer check farcry cod hl2 benchmarks or cs source be4 buying any graphics card ,thats my advice.try running games at 16bit color if u cant take card back to shop ,run with medium detail no shadows no vsync etc.

is the 9600 ( ATI RIGHT? ) really that much better? If so ill go for that, i play mostly css and Battlefield 1942/vietnam, so would it handle thoose games better? or even the 9800? im willing to pay a little more for good results.

in maplin, i can get a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis 128MB for same price, is this what i should go for?

    Tnx in advance

Def go for the 9800 over the 9600, just make sure there not "SE" versions.

If you post the max you are willing to spend someone will pick out the best card for your budget.

I managed to buy a brand new AGP ATI 9600XT 256MB for under €150 (Light-Retail version). It's a beautiful card for that price range. I can run Doom 3 at the second highest settings without any jerking or slowness, Half-Life 2 at medium-high settings and UT2k3/2k4 at full whoop. If you could find one for a similar price, go for it.

Having a decent graphics card isnt always enough, looking at his specs, he wouldnt be able to equal what you are getting, up until this christmas my brother had a celeron 2.7ghz, 9800 pro, and 3/4gig DDR333, but his performance was lacking compared to what I thought it should have been. By changing to an Athlon 64 2800+ s754, his performance in games was 2-3 times better. Stay away from Celerons for gaming PC's.

Thanks all for your msgs and advice, my deadline was this morning, so i took it back to shop, and exchanged it for a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro 256Mb. I ran the video stress test in CSS, and saw images i had never seen before with the geforce! One question though, my pc is "JUST" a little slower after i installed card, anyone have idea?

    Thanks Again

you are very lucky to get rid of that card, its a dog of a card now u have a excellent card u can play games at hi res with textures shadows etc on hi detail, try going to bios increase agp aperture to 256x 2 ,thats 312 ,if it allows you u to.u will need 512meg ram to exploit that card to its fullest potential ,the athlon is a great processor for gaming,i find 256meg is a bit low for games like hl2 farcry etc.aperture should be videocard ram multiplied by two,i think.go to bios advanced options video aperture set, knock off pci video in bios options.the 5200 is a waste of space.

Did you use drivercleaner to destroy all traces of the nvidia drivers?

It's an absolute must after changing from nvidia to ati.

You, and everyone else who said it, are so right. The radeon has bundles more options to tweak it with, plays videos smoothly, and most importantly :D
gaming is a treat. I play CSS mostly, and i now have *ALL* the settings to high, ( Bar 1 option ) and it plays it fine, with the exeption the tiles in the maps are purpleish, but i think thats my fault for increasing somthing in the settings part. It is a much better card, and even registers as a DX9 level card in CSS and HL2, wheras the fx5200 with DX9c installed, only regd at dx8.1. Thank you all for your help, greatly appriciated. Boards.ie rocks!

I only used this program last night after a direct x problem. Great little program but follow the instructions.

    Google my friend.
