Maybe we should get a few of these here and see what the majority say about them. I'll start it off :

    SB : 3000
    BB : 2500
    UTG : 4000
    You : 3800

    Blinds 300/600

You're on the button, dealt AJ off-suit.

UTG raises to 1200, next player folds, next player calls (holding 5000), down to you...

    Fold.

Could he not be trying to steal the blinds? I had AK suited the other night, raised in the UTG position, MP reraised me, and I called. Flop was useless, as was the turn and I folded. He had AJ off-suit. He would have beaten me anyways.

You dont say how many handed it is. Is it 4-handed? If so then I might be tempted to go all in, while both have big hands clearly the move might force AQ or JJ off, I'll risk a call from a lower pocket pair and QQ, KK, AA, AK will just have to be suffered.

If its 9 handed then I'd probably fold.

Calling is weak here, I dont think you can as you are married to the hand then. You'd be obliged to call a reraise so you might as well get the folding equity if you ARE going to play.

Raising is an option and it would depend on my knowledge of the players but 90% of the time I'm folding here.

Blinds are 300/600 and you only have 3800. A,J is a monster at this stage, ALL-IN.

Conflicting arguements here, some people saying Fold without explanation, others saying its a monster hand.

Interesting what the difference is, isn't it. :)

minimum raise to 1200 with a stack of 4K, I can't see any reason for someone doing that..

still with the stack I have left I'm all in here and taking my chances with the J

It looks a lot like the crap I have seen on VC low cost STT's.

9/10 times they are both holding junk that will bust your AJ all over the place when they river the 6 high straight.

I'm sure it really does depend on the level of poker you are playing.

Personally I'd throw it all in and hope its that 1/10 case ;)

Its the min raise that has me concerned actually, with 4K left he's just staked 1200 of it leaving himself 2800 on a 300/600 blind and he's about to be blinded. Any small PP is going to be all in, as is any bluff unless he's playing on an experienced table and thinks they might be more folding equity in a min raise UTG then in an All-In move...

Min raise WANTS to be called. When it gets to the BB, presuming the SB folds, the BB is VERY likely to call with any 2 or if he has half a hand to go over the top. (remember BB has only 2500, of which I presume 600 is already in!).

The min raise under the gun is strange and scary if the player is half decent. If he went all in I'd have been more inclined to say I'd call...

I agree. If the flop is low cards this fella is going all-in I think. So, is the AJ good enough to call an all-in (If youve only called) or are you prepared to re-raise all-in and hope for a fold or a favourable flop against TT/JJ/QQ/KK/AQ/AK etc? I go back to the point about knowing more about the players at the table.

I think I would go all in over the top here, unless I had the utg player down as very tricky or very tight. Give him the decision to make.
