Well first things first is to make sure you are picking right (make sure you re picking from your wrist, not your arm or your fingers). If you have that down and are fairly confident with your picking speed then you need to get yourself a good lick which encompasses stretching your fretting figures and using your alternate picking skills and practice and practice and practice that riff, starting at slow speeds (as your fretting hand will more than likely have trouble keeping up with your picking hand) and slowly increasing the pace as you progress (practice with a metronome if you can) till you can blast that riff quickly and flawlessly. Ill try and link some practice riffs for ya when i get home from college.

Not taking the piss, but you practice. You practice and practice. You practice some more.

If you don't know scales either take lessons from someone who does or else read up on the subject, this isn't something you're going to learn on a website like this.

Perhaps invest in some instructional DVDs, John Petrucci - Rock Discipline is a good one.

I second that! I don't suck half as much as I used to since getting it!

It's where you throw your guitar in to one of those wood chipping machines and bring the shredded pieces to a guitar luthier and he makes you a new guitar by piecing them together in a different shape.

guitar pro is a good prog with tabs that you can feed in. it actually show you on a virtual fredboard what you should be doing.

you can slow it down and of course repeat certain parts of a song, there are over 6000 tabs available for it for free.

practice makes perfect though, keep chipping away until your hands hurt. Stop, start over til your hands hurt.

try different plecs too, different shapes and makes until you find one you are happy with. as you get better your choice of plec will change though.
