Sure that is the same team that beats you most years :) . I can't see it to be honest. They were played off the pitch in last years final, I do not think they will come back from that come Championship time.

I don't know. The same thing was said after the final(s) in 96 and they reached the final again in 97 (only to be hockied, again  ). At the beginning of last years championship, nobody gave Mayo a prayer (33-1 for the championship this time last year I think) but they surprised everyone, probably even themselves. Paddy Power has them at 10-1 for this years championship behind Kerry (5/2), Tyrone (5/1), Armagh (6/1), Galway (8-1)?, Dublin (9-1) Mayo (10-1) :p:p

I think making McDonald captain was a master stroke which will hopefully reflect in the general play of the team. Ballina progressing so far in the club championship should auger well for the county too. One thing's for sure, this will be Maughans last chance and if failure is the order of this championship year, rumour has it that one John O'Mahoney is waiting in the wings. He was shafted badly by the county board in his first stint and I wouldn't begrudge him getting a second bite. If they're to go out of the championship this year, I hope it happens early cos my bank a/c still hasn't recovered from the shock of so much drinking and travelling last year!!!!

Says the man from ROS!! ;)
I don't have any pics handy of some Rossie running naked around a hotel handy!! ;)

I cannot see Mayo winning it to be honest, too much crap going on and with a manager who has a vendetta against some our best players the only time we will have any chance of bringing SAM home will be when Maughan is shown the door.

LOL. I'd forgotten that. I heard 'Cake' is opening more supermarkets and pubs than politicians. Gas man Shane. Last time I met him was in Castlebar about this time last year when he was positive that the Rossies were destined for championship glory ! I saw a photo of him in the paper a couple of weeks ago (getting sent off :D ) and he looks like he's piled the pounds back on again.

it all depends who ye beat galway this year in the championship. We will be out to avenge our defeat from last season.Mayo will never win sam, ye have had so many chances in the last 10 years and blown them all. Im not saying galway will win it as we have a new coach and some new players coming in but we will do better than last season. My tip is prob kerry or one from armagh or tyrone.
Dont get me started about dublin' chances lol

It hurts to say it, but I do not think any of the Leinster sides are strong enough to win it. I would put Laois Westmeath Dublin and now Wexford on a par, but none of them are good enough to my mind. I think Kerry and possibly Cork are serious contenders, and Armagh and Tyrone will be not too far away. Galway are not up to it and I don't think Mayo will have the heart.

How can you put Dublin and Wexford on a par with Laois and Westmeath???

    Are you mad or something?

    Strange people in Mayo.

A girl I know is from Kerry and has absolutely no interest in football whatsoever. She has never been to a match in her life and had never wanted to go. She was unfortunate enough to be sharing an apartment with a Mayo girl who jumped on the bandwagon last year as Mayo made it to the All-Ireland final. All my Kerry friend heard about was Mayo this and Mayo that. My friend couldn’t even name one player on the Kerry team.

The day of the Final eventually came and the Mayo girl got a ticket at the last minute and off she went to Croke Park. The Kerry girl went shopping.

After the match the Mayo girl arrives home in tears. For the next few weeks she kept giving me friend grief. "How could you humiliate us like that?" she would say. It drove my friend insane and she eventually had to move out.

In conclusion, Mayo people are all nuts.

    Good day. Up Kerry.

There was very little in between Dublin and Westmeath last year, and Dublin were woeful on the day. I realise the non dubs get a bit sick of us Dubs talking there chances up all the time, I try to avoid doing that, but I genuinely believe that they are as good as any other team in Leinster, I just do not think that is much of an achievement at the minute. As for Wexford, they are only one Leinster tilte (from recent years) behind both teams you mentioned. How can you think those two teams are that far ahead of Dublin and Wexford? It is not like they have dominated Leinster.

Laois and Westmeath showed how good they were by going nowhere after winning Leinster. There is very little between any of the top 7 teams in Leinster. I'd pick Laois as favourites to win Leinster 05, but only by a hair's breath.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

To be honest, I think that if Cavan meet either Laois or Westmeath in the Championship this year that Cavan would beat them. If Cavan meet Dublin in the Championship this year Dublin would probably beat Cavan. That is just my opinion.

Dublin's hype is their own downfall against decent teams like Laois and Westmeath. If they met someone with a bit of history like Cavan they'd be more up for it and would probably win those games. Against teams like Armagh and Kerry, Dublin just aren't good enough.

Less! Less my eye. Waterford to play New York in the All-Ireland final after New York having earlier humbled Mayo in the Connacht final.

Bring back that guy from Wickla, at least he was funny!

Also, stop talking about Westmeath like they are a great side. They won one Leinster. We'd a pretty easy run after Offaly ;) to the final. If they do well this year then maybe class them as a decent team.

As for the others that were mentioned: Dublin think they are a lot better than they are. Wexford although seriously improving are pretty much a one man team. Laois for me stand out as the best team in Leinster at the moment. They've got a decent and pretty experiences team at this stage. They've also got good depth. Offaly are a team that I think might surprise in Leinster this year.

I would agree that Laois are probably the county with the best chance of winning Leinster this year, they are going well in the league with a large number of players missing and last year were plagued with serious injuries.

Dublin are always dangerous, I don't think that Westmeath will be as good as last year when they seemed determined not to lose.

I would disagree that Wexford are just a one man team, Redmond Barry and Colm Morris would be in any other team in Leinster! Diarmuid Kinsella is playing this year after being injured all last season and has scored 4 points in each of his league games from midfield this year! He is as accurate from frees as Mattie Forde! Anyway I hope the yellowbellies can win Leinster for the first time since 1945!

I predict a Wexford Laois leinster final!

As for Mayo they will be a good team in years to come, but until they win the big one there will always be questions over their temperment! Also there are a number of very good teams who can beat each other on any given day, and I would consider Mayo a team who can easily lose to underdogs (again mentality)

i think mayo have a good chance.i hope they win it,same for the dubs.naturally i follow dublin and mayo as i am born in dublin and my family originated anfd camr from mayo.

i think fermanagh might surprise people this year.they could win the ulster title.i think westmeaths chances are slimmer this year.

counties pretty much without a hope are wexford, louth, monaghan, antrim, sligo, roscommon, waterford and wicklow

offaly are a good team but aren't in the same class as dublin, kerry, armagh, mayo and galway.

i think kerry will be in the final but i wish someone would knock them out because they are cocky.their attitude is...."we won't go to the semis cause we're going to the final".......hence the poor turnout at the games you see on tv.apart from wishing dublin or mayo win sam,i would love if kerry were brought to shame and get beat by some team like limerick......oh wait that should've and could've happened 2 years ago

You're an idiot blackbelt. THousands of us go to all the Kerry matches every year. You're being very unfair to the real Kerry fans. Dont be such a sore loser. I realy hate people who hope a team will lose. It just shows your not a real sports person and not a GAA fan. THose Kerry players put in as much work as everyone else and they deserve to win if they have better players.

And being eaten by Limerick would not be an embarrasment. Morons like you underestimate Limerick. I have no problem losing to a better team. In fact I hope Im there they day they do beat Kerry as it will be a brilliant day because Limerick people are great craic.

    Great assesment

You are talking about Roscommon who could beat Mayo and get to the Connaught final. You are also talking about Wexford top of division 1B and who could beat Dublin to get to the Leinster final. May I also add the last three teams to knock Wexford out of the Leinster championship have gone on to win it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

yes maybe i am being a bit unfair to the real kerry supporters but the fact remains that there are thousands of kerry fans that think this way and i know from personal experience from my relatives relatives.

as for wanting a team to lose,i don't take it personally afterall it is sport but gaa is becoming a bit predictable because kerry are always there.i have nothing against kerry or kerry people i think they are v nice people.but it would freshen things up if they were knocked out.....then people could not predict as much.

for example....soccer.man utd and arsenal have always won the premiership.not much joy and excitement there when those two teams keep winning.as for my assessment of wexford i admit i was unfair.afterall they kicked the biffo's off the pitch last season.yes roscommon did well two years ago and bet mayo and kildare.but waterford, wicklow, louth, tipperary have not established themselves recently or in the last few years.its always going to be the same teams dominating...in connaucht mayo and galway,in ulster tyrone and armagh,in leinster dublin and laois and in munster cork and kerry.

as for limerick, they are a team that don't do great in football unlike the hurling.i wanted to see them beat kerry.

calling me an idiot for having an opinion and expressing it makes you the idiot here because i am entitled to my opinion.u wanna criticize then go ahead but calling people idiots is not going to get you anywhere.it just makes you look a bit childish

So you know thousands of Kerry people. I've lived there half my life and I dont know that many.

Byt the way Kerry dont win the all Ireland every year.
    2004 Kerry
    2003 Tyrone
    2002 Armagh
    2001 Galway
    2000 Kerry
    1999 Meath
    1998 Galway
    1997 Kerry
    1996 Meath
    1995 Dublin
    1994 Down
    1993 Derry
    1992 Donegal
    1991 Down
    1990 Cork
    1989 Cork
    1988 Meath
    1987 Meath
    1986 Kerry

In the 70's and 80's we won a load of them but thats history now.

I've got some friends from Offaly and the still go on about a match they beat us in over 20 years ago. But when I see Offaly playing I dont hope the lose. No matter who's playing I always hope the the players do themselves justice. Its how a true sports fan should behalve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

sportmanship has nothing to do with wanting a team to win or lose.i can assume that thousands of kerry fans think like this just like people from dublin think dublin are useless.i have a lot of neighbours from kerry and they think the same to.and i know that in the last 19 finals kerry won 4.but they have also been to some finals they didn't win.

i was around for the eighties and remember them winning finals.so although its history i can still remember.
nothing personal against kerry fans or kerry itself,i would just like to see them being knocked out so the all ireland would be less predictable.

i'm not being unsportsmanlike,i don't have a problem with kerry winning all irelands,i would just rather see different teams having a better chance each year and making it unpredictable.this is the view i have that makes gaa more interesting than soccer.

however i will make a statement that does look v unsportsmanlike and that is in regards to Meath.i don't think they deserved to win half the all irelands they did in the eighties and nineties because they played dirty to get where they got.it wasn't about playing fair or playing better,it was about how dirty and unfair and what they could get away with that let them get the all irelands.watch the games against dublin to get a good idea.sure every team can play dirty but i haven't seen it like i have when meath play.

Are you serious? I think you rate your own county a bit higher than they really are. Derry or Cavan are not good enough at this moment to challange for an Ulster title.

Tyrone or Armagh will be favourites for the Ulster title again, but I wouldnt forget about Fermanagh or Donegal, both on their day could beat the top two teams in Ulster.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Yep dead serious. Derry are one of the best teams in Ireland at the moment, you have to remember that they got to the All Ireland semi-finals last year. They had a freakish off day against Tyrone and they picked themselves up after that and done really well. They are a super fit team that can run all day.

I may be biased with my opinion on Cavan, but what I do know is that we have some great players coming through and sooner or later they will get their break. I suppose you're forgetting our performance's against Down and Armagh last year? Cavan had very young and unexperienced sides out those days and they still put it up to a great Armagh team and a decent Down outfit. Now they are a year older and wiser and they will have learned to take their scores when they need to.

Armagh and Tyrone are over the hill IMO, but I'd say out of the two Tyrone will do better as they always have good sides coming through. But I don't think it will be their year this year. Donegal are also getting on a bit, some of their players just aren't good enough any more.

Fermanagh will give Ulster a good rattle this year, I'd say now is the time for them to step up to the plate and win their first title.

They were very lucky to get to the All Ireland semi last year (sure the previous year even the Dubs hammered them in Clones). Tyrone are far the best team in Ulster - not unbeatable, but they should be strong favourites.

Funny that... I seem to remember two teams from this years "Vauxhall Conference" in the All Ireland semi-finals last year with Dublin nowhere to be seen. ;)
