So I've installed a 250GB SATA hard drive, and windows installs it as a SCSI ATA drive in device manager. However, there's no drive letter associated with the drive. Why doesn't windows use a drive letter to allow me to access the device? How am I supposed to use the drive if I can't get access to it?

I don't think it shows up if it's unpartitioned. Go to Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management. Create a partition from there. Then it'll give it a drive letter and it'll show up in windows and you can format it.

I was thinking that might be the problem. The other thing is that I'm looking to create two partitions from the drive: a partition for knoppix, and a partition for storing files in FAT32 (lunix doesn't write to NTFS file system properly, allegedly). If I create the FAT32 partition first in windows, should I be able to partition the rest of the drive in Knoppix? Or should I make the knoppix partition first?
