Garda speed cameras

Could anyone tell me how the mobile speed cameras work. How do I know if I got caught. Do I have to get pulled over by the police to give me a fine(in which case I got away with it) or will they send me a fine in the post. And if it does come in the post how long do I have to wait.

They send you the fine in the post. You can deny the charge and request a photo but they charge you an extra 25 eurodollars or something.

If you contest the fine and you're found guilty in court they'll slap a much bigger fine on you.

If you weren't pulled they might send you a fine in the post but that's rare enough. Usually they pull you over if they're going to fine you. If you don't get anything in about two weeks you should be ok.

I believe they send the photo out with the fine automatically.

How can they prove who was driving?

They don't have to. If it's your car, it's your responsibility.

In Germany there were able to do it by measuring your head, similar to a fingerprint.

Germans do have over-sized heads though :)

Look for a white transit van parked on the side of the road (how wonderfully vague!). My oul lad got fined for doin 36 in a 30 zone(caught by the infamous van). A letter arrived in the post, stating the car registration and the speed it was doing in a particular zone. Bang bang 2 points and a lovely fine.

What if the car is co-owned by a spouse? How do they know whose licence to add penalty points to?

The onus is on you to be sentient enough to be able to name which one of you was driving at the time.

I was told to look out for red vans parked on the left hand side. Its a lottery anyway, when does traffic actually move below 30mph? Do they do you if you are just keeping up with the traffic?

9 out of 10 Garda speed guns do not have the facility to print digital photos.. if it was a garda with a tripod you have probably got away with it...

Yeah. My ma got done for doing 5mph over the speed limit up towards the North, (in a Dublin regged car), even though the traffic in front was pulling away (they were clearly more over the limit) the cops stopped and fined her. She tried the ol' keeping up with the traffic excuse, and pointed out that the cars in front had been going even faster, but they just said "its your responsibility", which I guess is fair enough.

It is true, essentially. Their proof is that the car is yours, so it's beyond reasonable doubt that you were the one driving the car. To counter their evidence, you need to supply evidence that someone else may have been driving the car, or that the car could otherwise have been on the road, and/or you weren't.

    Which is only reasonable.

Sorry, misunderstanding: Yes, the onus is on the owner to prove that they weren't driving the car. Apologies to Bard for my jumping the gun. I stand by my other point: I got a pretty photo of myself from those lovable assholes in Bandon Garda station several months ago, and I wasn't charged for it.
