I have a laptop with 256 mb ram and no dedicated graphics card. I was wondering which would make games run faster, more memory or a dedicated graphics card, for the same price?

Not sure about your model of lappy but it may be a bit difficult upgrading/adding a dedicated card...

So my best option would be to upgrade the memory then?

Most likely, but post your laptop model/make...some are upgradeable (although it's a bit more complex than upgrading a desktop)

as far as I know the more RAM you have with an integrated gfx chip, the more it will be able to utilise. I think you can specify in the BIOS.
Getting your hands on a card mat be costly though...

I doubt very much upgrading the video is even an option, they're onboard, as in on the motherboard, not at all like PCI slots. You're only real way of gaining performance is to add more ram (which will speed up general system performance, less writing to disk etc, and you MAY be able to allocate more of this sysem memory to the graphics card, which will mean the video card can have more space to store textures). On the whole, standard laptops aren't that suitable for any recent 3d games unless you've got either a ATI or NVidia chipset on board.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I think I'll get more RAM for it. It's a compaq presario r3000 btw.

You're wasting your time trying to use a laptop with onboard gfx to play newer 3d games if you ask me. I'd say your best bet is to get something to play that doesnt need the latest and greatest gfx like championship manager or something oldish from www.the-underdogs.org.
