Blue Screen Of Death - c000021a

    Hey,

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2 (on my laptop) and yesterday I decided that I'd like RedHat to run off the laptop also. I used a partition manager (can't exactly remember which one) and resized my main partition (which was only half full) so linux would have 2GB free.

PC rebooted. I didn't put the Linux disc in yet, and it goes to "Operating System Error" (not OS not found)

So I insert the Dell Recovery CD and enter the Recovery Console. It says that my main partition is OS/2

I decide to install linux on it's 2GB regardless, and I add in /dev/hda2 to the OS choices list (that's where windows was). Now if I choose Windows from the boot loader, it loads as far as where the login screen would come up, then I get a stop error
STOP: C000021A {Fatal System Error} .... system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x0000000)The system has been shutdown

Linux can see the drive, but can't access it (its NTFS) and nothing seems to work. I also tried installing Windows onto the 2GB partition, which worked, but it couldn't get into the C: Partition either. I have also tried Safe Mode

I know my data is there... I downloaded a recovery program onto the 2GB windows install, which was able to recover my data, but it wouldn't save it anywhere without me paying $350. There has to be a DIY or Freeware way out of this.

Thanks for reading this long post. I appreciate in advance any suggestions to fix the problem, and I apologize for leaving out some info somewhere.

    Thanks,
    Snapscan

    Knoppix will read NTFS
as will a windows98 boot disk with NTFS Dos
rest2514 is fairly good at deleted files

If push comes to shove gpart on the knoppix CD could be used to attempt to restore the partition table to it's original state - backup the table first and don't bother if you the "partition utility" moved files instead of just shrinking the end of the partition back into free space.

How much did you resize the partition by as win XP can get very snotty about that, part of the copy protection mechanism.

Thanks for your reply. I'll get my hands on Knoppix tonight and try it out. The partition size was 2GB (2048MB) of empty space at the end of the drive that had been defragged right before.

Thanks again for that Midnight. I booted up into knoppix, launched samba server and started transfering stuff across. Took 27 hours btw!

Have now reinstalled windows and am ready to transfer stuff back over again. One thing I was surprised by was the ammount of viruses (virii?) that were found. I do regular scans and use the same AV on my laptop as on my PC, but somehow, it found the virus in loads of places. Time to get a new AV

    Once again, thanks.
