Would anyone be able to tell me the official closing hours for pubs in Ireland - what time it should be shut including the half hour drinking time?

I need some legal info about this - I did a search in google and yahoo and couldnt find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Correct

Also Night Club licences have to close at 2.30
    Theatre licences close at 3

Afaik there's some other licence that allows places to open later but I'm not sure of any pubs that have it and it could be total BS

Well, there's always the early houses in Smithfield. They open around 7, and some of them have DJs and Karaoke until lunchtime...hehe

LOL! Are you serious?? Where abouts is Smithfield for future reference? How far from town? and what days do they have DJ's etc. on? (or is it random days?)

There is an early house just off Pearse St, in the City Centre. Smith field is back down the other way from town, past Jervis St

The "4am Theatre Licence" was stopped last October.

From the Irish Times (5th Oct 04):

    Licensing loophole to be closed
    Carl O'Brien

The Minister for Justice is to close a loophole which allows nightclubs to use theatre licences to operate beyond normal closing hours.

Officials in the Department of Justice feel the licence is being abused by some venues and have confirmed that a provision will be inserted in liquor-licensing legislation to close off what they see as a loophole in the law.

Dublin District Court last week set a 2.30 a.m. curfew on establishments with theatre licences in response to Garda reports of public order problems late at night.

The Consolidated Liquor Licensing Bill, due to come before the Oireachtas later this year, will also provide special permits for nightclubs for the first time.

At present they are licensed in the same way as pubs and are obliged to apply regularly to the court for permission to trade beyond normal pub closing hours. It is understood that the legislation will not, however, extend opening hours for nightclubs beyond 2.30 a.m. The industry is seeking an extension in opening hours as they say their businesses are under threat from pubs which also have licences to stay open until 2.30 a.m.

While details of the legislation are still being drawn up, it is expected to draw on the conclusion of the Commission on Liquor Licensing, published last year. It recommended that in the area of theatre licences, only bona fide theatres should be able to obtain them by defining "theatre" and "performance" in the legislation.

The commission said alcohol should not be sold beyond standard opening hours for licensed premises and that alcohol should not be available during performances, to ensure the sale of alcohol was only an "ancillary activity". It also said alcohol should not be served during performances.

However, it said there should be room to apply for special exemptions for specific performances.

The legislation is also expected to include provision for new licences for café-style bars, as part of an effort by the Minister to change the country's drinking culture. It is understood that under current plans, the licences would be issued to premises on condition that they served food at all times, were of limited size and were in areas where there was judged to be a legitimate need for such premises.

The Minister believes these smaller premises will counterbalance the effects of "superpubs", which many believe have contributed to a rise in binge-drinking.

There is the Cameo pub. It is off Capel St. If you walk up Capel St (away from the bridge). Stay on the left hand side and as you get to the pawnbrokers (after all the furniture and pet shops) take a left. That pub opens at 7am Monday to Saturday. A dj plays there twice a week from 7 to 11am. It can be great craic in there. Think you have to pay a fiver in when the DJ is on.

There was an article in the Sunday Indo about it the week before last.

Forget to mention. The DJ plays on a Saturday and a Monday morning.

That new Karaoke bar on Exchequer St serves drink till 4am as far as i know. I think though that is because it is primarily a restaurant and they can serve drink till that time.

Was watching a program on BBC last night (Drunk & Dangerous or something), about the trouble that is caused by having all theirs pubs close at 11, and speculating what the change in November will bring. In Novemeber certain UK pubs/ clubs will be able to stay open all night.
I am really curios to see how that will work out for them - I think it could go either way. But if it works it may be something that will be considered over here...

Yes, UK and Ireland probably have the worst problem with drink related crime, yet the strictest laws..coincidence? All i know is 10,000 drunk people pissed off they just got kicked out of pub on a saturday night all at the same time is asking for trouble....but that's an old argument
Hopefully it works out in the UK

    Thanks for the replies.

Does 11.30 during the week mean that the pub doors should be closed exactly legally at 11.30 (is that including the drinking up time?) and on sat and sunday also?

Would anyone know where I could find any legal info on this (preferably on the net? I tried myself but had no luck).

    Thanks

    Info

I'm pretty sure all those times are without the drinking up time

I presume this information is for a dispute or an annoyance of some kind, or a business enquerry,so i'll try to be serious for a second :p these links are for both:
    http://www.p45.net/ejitsguides/barman/
    http://www.irlgov.ie/debates-00/s18april/sect4.htm

Look under drinking legislation for links...found a couple for you....(just a 2 minute search, you'll find more relevant stuff yourself)
As far as i know, the legislation is only covering the licencing of selling alcohol, i.e. at 11.30 the pub can no longer serve an alcoholic drink, and they usually give you half an hour drinking time, and then doors shut. However, this only covers licencing to serve, whereas a pub also has a trading licence, so in theroy, a pub could stay open 24 hours (simular to a spar etc.) and only sell soft drinks outside the hours of alcohol licencing, but obviously this is not economically viable for them, so they don't. So to answer your question, there is no pub closing time, in a literal sense, just a alcohol serving time frame.
    I hope that's helpfull. :)
