    hi
i recently upgraded my comp with an ASUS P4V8X-X P4X533 motherboard, P4 2.4 chip & samsung 120g HDD.
the ASUS board has onboard sound but i havent seem to been able to get any sound out of the board.
i installed the soundman audio driver that came with the disk, but it didnt seem to instal the sound as i do not have that little generic speaker picture that windows always shows in the systray, so i went to the ASUS website and reinstalled the driver, but still no avail.
the speakers work fine, so i can't see what the problem could be

    can any1 help please?
    cheers

You could check the bios settings to make sure onboard audio is enabled, usually press "delete" or "F1" on boot up to get into the bios.

The Volume icon can be turned on and off in Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Multimedia. However, my ASUS (A7N8X) has an nVidia chip and the drivers provide their own tray icon (dunno if this is significant at all).

The sound form my computer stopped working for a while but I fixed it by flashing the bios with the latest update. It had been working without any problems before this however.

None of this directly answers your problem but hopefully it'll point you in the right direction

yes, i tried switching the sound on thru the control panel and the onboard chip does indeed have its own icon (soundman i think it is) and that is in the systray, so i shall try checking the bios when i am at the computer next. thanks
btw...where did you flash the bios from...asus.com ?
...i couldnt seem to find anything under the download section for the P4V8X-X board

    combatcow:
i went into the bios and the enable ac97 oboard sound is set to auto (enabled)
    any other thoughts?

    talking walknut:
i tried updating the bios, but i do not have a floppy drive and it seems as thought you need to do it with a floppy through dos...is there no way to do this through windows or even through dos without using the floppy drive?

    cheers lads

ho humm...yup that sounds ok to me...

I suppose on to the bios update...this asus prog will let you update the bios from windows, it will be on the mobo driver cd...called AsusUpdate...it's very easy to use.
