Power Calibration error

    PC : Dell Dimension 4400
    CD RW/DVD: Samsung SM-308B
    Software : Nero
CD Make : TDK & Mitsubishi

Everytime I try to erase an 'RW CD' I get 'Power Calibration error'. I upgraded the firmware to 'T101' which I downloaded from Samsung and 'XP01' which I downloaded from DELL, both of these were supposed to fix the problem but they haven't.
Anyone got any ideas of where I go from here apart from buying a new PSU or CD RW.
I would really appreciate any help at all on this  .

That happens with old CD-RWs afair. You only get a few hundred burns out of them before they die - max.

else, if it's new, might just be a corrupted disc.

Oh, and burning and rewriting with different software seems to cause hiccups too.

IIRC there is an area at the start of the disk which isn't used for data but can be used by the drive to calibrate itself. If the area is full then you've to use another CDR - or the drive could be on the way out or the sw might need sorting or you might have a trojan or virus or other junk or the head might not be able to slide along the track, hope you figure out which one soon cos it can take a while to diag.

Try reading a full CD >650MB to make sure the drive is ok mechanically
Try a CDRW in the drive and see how it likes it
if both work try slower speed burning or different brand of CDR's

Thanks everyone, but the CDs I'm using are 'Brand New', I don't have a problem burning CDs just formatting them which I've never been able to do. I can burn CD Rs no problem.
By the way my OS is XP Home SP2 :)

Ditch the drive Jackit , I had the same problem with a pioneer dvr106 it was just over one year old, Its down to a dirty\faulty laser unit(trawled the pioneer site) , but I did keep my one to use it as a dvd rom only drive, and its perfect for this!
