Hi, im 20 and i recently decided to get fit, and i am now at a standard where i would like to get into team sports again. i used to play hurling as a kid in primary school, and i loved it, i am probably not the greatest, but i was on my school team,so i couldn't have been that bad.

so all i want to do, is join a club, go to training and be on like the d's, or whatever the worst team they have is, and hopefully as i get better i'll move up to a better team, but for now all i want to do is get involved,

and so i am wondering if anyone can recommend a good team in south dublin that welcomes new people.

if anyone can suggest anywhere it would be great,

    cheers

Ballboden St Endas and St Judes are two very good hurling teams in South Dublin, both have plenty of teams, and welcome newcomers.

The clubhouse for Ballyboden is on the Firhouse Road. If you are coming from town direction, go through Templeogue village and then take a left over the bridge. Ath the far end of the bridge take a right, and the club house is on your left about half a mile up the road.

i live in [snipped], but they don't have any "beginners" teams. i spoke to them and they said i am more than welcome to go to training, but i wanna get a bit of experience first with people nearer my own standard

    I see,

you are living in an area of Dublin that doesnt have much hurling.
Perhaps you can look at kilmacud http://www.kilmacudcrokes-hurling.com/main.html

also on the south side is Ballyboden, St Marks, Crumlin, Judes, Thomas Davies, St annes, Portabello and a few more that may or may not play hurling http://www.clubgaa.ie/dublin/

All I can say is start practicing the basic skills on your own - pick ups, catching, hand pass and hitting on the weak side.

It might take a while but its worth practicing on your own as you will see a dramatic improvement.

Take the hurl out to a park and away you go...

    -20 years old.
    -From Dublin.
    -Fit
    -Played at primary school level.

sounds to me like you're at least good enough for the dublin seniors.

move down to Ros and we'll give you a game

    Good luck with it though.

Another good idea is to find a high wall with a nice falt patch of tarmac or concrete out from it. Get a tennis ball and practice your control of the ball hitting it off the wall and back onto the hurl - getting it into your weak hand in just two touches at first, then one touch later. both off the ground and through the air.

this is called a 'speed wall' drill. Clare used it a lot in 1995 and Wexford used it last year.

    Always practice both sides!!

not exactly sure what you mean, but i will give it a try, cheers.
