Trend Micro's free anti-virus scan "PC Housecall". http://housecall.trendmicro.com

For spyware, the free edition of AdAware by www.lavasoft.com.

Surf over to www.majorgeeks.com, look in the right hand column and click on "New? Start here." The whole site is extremely helpful with spyware, firewalls, anti-virus software, utilities, etc. Some of it is free or shareware. Look at the left hand column and knock yourself out! :^)

http://housecall.antivirus.com is pretty good www.antivirus.com is a good source of info on the latest viruses.

prevention is better than cure so it would be a good idea to include some references to firewall software in your project too.

http://www.zonelabs.com offer a free firewall called zonealarm. also do a google for kerio personal firewall. also free and also quite good.

For viruses, avg free edition from www.grisoft.com

For spyware, adaware etc, Hijack This and "run -> msconfig -> Startup tab". If you get confused with these get someone else to do it or else learn how, everyone has to sometime :)

    Fobia.

If you have a suspicious file, you can upload it to Kaspersky here: http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus and they will scan it real time for you.

Avast-On-Access virus scanner/firewall/pop protection etc. is very good- definition files updated almost daily and best of all- its totally free for homeusers.

    www.avast.com

You have to register to get a licence key- but if you choose the "homeuser" option- its entirely free.
