This really is fantastic news. It'll probably take them a pretty long time to make the new series though.

I knew about this last week, good to see they finally made the announcment. :)

One thing I've heard about the second season is that they might stick with the 13 episode format, putting quality over quantity.

I think this would be the best way of doing things, not only would it be made quicker but we would have a better chance of seeing a series of similar quality to the first, which would obviousely be a damned good thing!

Really fantastic news. The BSG Forum lives on!

At least we have the Season 1 DVD release slated for 28/03/05 (according to Play.com) to tide us over until the new season airs.
No word on extra features yet but some commentaries and the deleted scenes now showing up on SciFi.com would be very welcome additions!

Will anyone here be indulging themselves in this purchase?

Already have it on order from play :D

They would be welcome but I won't be purchasing that edition - it's a tad expensive, given there's only 13 episodes (altho' not HBO expensive). The artwork's pretty poor too. Think I'll wait to see what the R1 release is like.

    SO SAY WE ALL!
    :)
great news! I would like the episode count to go up to 20 tho, 13 is a bit on the short side but i must admit the quality of series one was generally very high.

It would have been a crime agianst good TV if the pulled the plug after 1 season. Absolute stellar cast. Hope they dont change the OST.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

I'm going to hold off until the R1 release myself as I'm thinking of the R2 release of the mini-series: We just got a Sci-Fi Channel special for extras, while Americans got a bunch of deleted scenes, a re "making ofs" and what not.

Omg Omg Omg series 2 and a DVD weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

On a calmer note - 3.2m viewers is a good episode for the Sci-fi channel? Surely the Sky 1 eps werent far off those kinda numbers?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 931 ✭✭✭c0y0te

    Woot! :D

I had heard something similar a while ago, but wanted to wait for the official confirmation. That's brilliant news lads. I dont' care if they go for 13 eps or 20.. as long as they maintain the pace, quality and 'feel' of the show.

I'm just finishing up watching season 5 of Babylon 5 on DVD, and even though this was one of my favourite shows of all time, I remain convinced that BSG will outperform it. The sheer quality and inventiveness of season 1 is just amazing, when you consider the other so-called competition in the sci-fi genre and you realise just how unique this show is.

Roll on season 2. Bring me plot, bring me character, bring me aliens, just make sure you bring back Baltar and Six

Brilliant, a second season. I wonder if they'll kill off Roslyn, or invent some miracle cure (Maybe downloading her mind into a Cylon body or something)

I hope that they keep up the level of storytelling and good production values from the first. I think we'll all be dissappointed if it falls into the star Trek trap of "ooh a strange alien planet, let's beam down, luckily the atmosphere just happens to be nitrogen oxygen, ooh a strange alien race, they must be aliens, their skin is purple, interesting that they still have five fingers and only one pair of hands".

Actually, I'd like to see it become more difficult to use the FTL drive. In the mini series, using the FTL was risky and only attempted when necessary. Later though, it became a matter of routine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭JustHalf

The problem with the FTL drive was confined to the Galactica, and I think it was to do with how long the Galactica's FTL drives had been unused (Tigh mentions 20 - 22 years). It's also unlikely that the officers on board had any practical experience with FTL jumps... Lieutenant Gaida would have been eight at most at the time.

Have to remember that in the first series only about 2 months passed from the mini series to episode 13, so if they keep that sort of pace up in this series I doubt Roslyn will die, although I suspect she will begin to degrade.

More details: The delay in announcing season 2 was basically down to negotiations over how many episodes there would be and who would show it first (as well as Sky and Sci-Fi US, NBC had strong interest as well).

Filming on the first 10 episodes will begin in the third week of March, then a one-month break and then the last 10 episodes will be filmed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭Haruspex

    Potential
"[...] the entire ensemble cast will return for season two, including Edward James Olmos". Good news all the same to see Eddie reprise his role!

Following on from Fenster's post, Sci Fi Wire has the official announcement of the 20 episode order here. The potential spoiler above is quoted from this, so click with caution!

Hopefully they'll be able to maintain the quality over a 20 episode run and the extra 7 won't detract from the consistency we've been used to! As BSG production costs were already mooted to be very high, I hope this won't harm its budget too much...

It's also a summer premiere for season two, so when would the ETA be for Sky I wonder? Maybe we won't have as long to wait as we initially thought! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,758 ✭✭✭Peace

I heard a rumour that they put a few bullets in ole eddie because he was going to ask for a salary raise and they couldn't budget for it....

Then again its just a rumour.

hey guys, have u heard that tv guide magazine will feature battlestar and going to be the coverstory on their march 17th edtion??....dope im really looking forward to that....planning to buy one....hope that they will feature more about starbuck :D

Is there any news on the initial air date yet?

I think I saw it mentioned on the forum somewhere but can't find the post.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

June or July is the US, I don't have the date on hand, myself. On the flipside, this means the series will have a mid-season break, ala Stargate and Enterprise, due to the early start time.

I plan to be the first to download the torrents as everything points to the season opener to be really something else. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 369 ✭✭weehamster

I think its sad that Sky didnt insist that they have first showing again (but not suprised by the large number of 'torrents' done on the U.S side). It was very refershing that Season 1 was shown this side of the pond B4 the U.S.

Just wondering, are Sky involved with season 2 as much (if at all) as season1?
As for when Sky are showing it, I guess it will be September as this month that Sky normally launch something big, have major changes or have big promos.

Total waste of time buying the first copy, watch the reruns or your recorded copies
until they bring out the proper formated disc's a month before the new series
airs as is always the case, DVD's are money spinners for the fat cats, why support them ?

I agree with you on the discs, having gotten them as a birthday present. The quality of picture is crap, some torrent rips I've seen are better the only extras to speak of are already downloadable from the Sci-Fi website.

    Wait for region 1 indeed.

Ah well, it'll tide me over until July. I've had fairly detailed spoilers for the first half of season two and its gonna be a damm impressive season.

Question is, Will Adama turn out to be a Cylon agent or will he just be dead ?

He'll survive but they will give him a cylon stomach to replace the one that got blown away.....

He'll survive but they will give him a cylon stomach to replace the one that got blown away.....

    *cry*

You just ruined the season 2 cliffhanger, where Adama's odd behaviour is explained to be a Cylon spleen fitted by Doc Cottle, who is in fact the Cylon ringleader on Galactica. He conspired with Boomer to shoot out Adama's old one in order to fit the new one for nefarious purposes.

Its revealed during a lesbian fling between Boomer and Starbuck toward the end of the season, in a plot that will be condemned by many fans as simply a move to garner more ratings.

    :p

still like to know about Adama though

Well having watched all the episodes a couple of times, i have a few theories about all the strange happenings in this SUPERB series.

One things that still puzzles me, is who the hell gave Adama the note "there are only 12 Cylon copies". It's a scene almost at the end of the pilot, before the human cylons enter Ragnor station. Who could know that? Why tell Adama? Why doesn't he do anything with it, or why doesn't the rest of the miniseries ever come back on that note. Also I like the fact that the cylons used 12 copies, just like the 12 colonies. So does that mean the cylons KNOW there is'nt a 13th colony...earth, unlike the "so say we all speech" Adama just delivered... Is it just a note to let Adama see that the cylons know everything, and are everywhere...to destroy his psyche? Or is he really a cylon, and is he getting info?...

Baltar knew, Six told him. Ergo he wrote the note.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Feydakeen

I thought of that too, but it's not because they made 12 copies of 6 that they made 12 copies of everyone no? And why would Baltar risk being exposed as someone who knew too much of the cylons to tell something that seems rather trivial?
And still the way Adama reacted was strange I thought... any thoughts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭Horatio

The way Adama looked at the note suggested to me
that he was aware the Cylons were abord Galactica
but the fact that he nevers tells Rosslyn suggests something
allright especially coupled with the fact that the Cylons say
he is one of them. With the way in which they have constructed
the sllepper form of the Cylons they have left it in such a way
that anyone could be a Cylon, pretty cool in fact.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 592 ✭✭✭poobum

never realy got into this show...i liked the old movies but the series(i watched most of it) never realy caught my attention just something to watch when nothing else was on!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Feydakeen

    Exactly....

Which leads to the question, why if the cylons have such a complete control of the situation, have they not already destroyed the Battlestart and fleet?

The petri-theory is all nice, but in fact with the capture of 12 colonies, there should be plenty of humans still left alive who could serve as human ants in an ant farm. So why take the (aleit very small) chance of letting some escape in ships even though they have a load of agents aboard?

The cylons knew very well the Galactica was about to be decomissioned (Boomer and Doral) and they knew very well it hadn't a fully integrated PC network system, so it couldn't have been destroyed with the usual sneak tactics... So why didn't they hold off the attack till the decomissioning was complete? Because they wanted it to escape...maybe they hadn't counted on the rescue ops and the size of the fleet with survivors, but the Battlestar had to escape...

Ok so they counted on the escape, but possibly not ONLY for experimenting on human behaviour, but rather because they think that Earth could possibly exist and that forcing the humans into an impossible situation would make them rescourcefull enough to find the way to earth? That way they could destroy that last bastion of mankind too? They knew very well the Battlestar didn't have any ammunition left, so they counted on BSG jumping to Ragnar station (Hence the stationing of Leobon to "welcome the fleet") In the meantime they are testing the crew on...fatigue ("33"), Deceit ("Six degrees of separation"...), water shortage ("Water"), Battle tactics ("The Hand of God")...

It's this God thing that 6 is always going on about, in the old series we had walking
toasters with no brains, now we have 6 and the gang who have only realy given
us a glimsp of what their ultimate plan is, thay have been planning this for over 40 years so they obviously as you pointed out have all the angles covered

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

    Such speculations...

To spoil the entire season or not? :p
