Hi. Im getting worried about my weight. I used to love my food but lately ive just gone off it lately.
Generally i am a picky eater but i eats lots of what i do like (carrots, wedges pasta, rice, curry, fruit and chicken, other than that i dont really eat much meat.) lately though i just feel sick when i have to eat, refuse to eat it or if i have to i just feel like throwing it all up. i cant seem to get enough of cheese and ham rolls/sandwiches though. but the chesse MUST be grated. Its not as if i had an issue with my weight before. Now it feels like im going crazy as i dont know whats going on. I cant sleep through a full night either. approx wake up every 2 hours, and accoring to my boyf i can scream/get upset in my sleep... ive drooped from about 8 stone to under 7 .5 in 3 weeks.
any advise would be appricated in order wanting to eat again wiyhout feeling ill. i really really really dont want to the doctor??

You prob need to go to a doctor, sounds serious to me.if you're not going to I'd suggest cutting out all processed\added sugar out of your diet and make sure you drink enough water. Thats more so to help with the sleep though I really have no idea what could cause the food problem

As Beruthiuel pointed out in a recent thread, no-one here can make a qualified diagnosis (or something to that effect). What people can do, perhaps, is work on getting you to go to the doctor.

Why don't you want to go to the doctor?

Dont want to go a doctor as they make me feel faint and nervous. had a few bad experiences with docs/needles before

How is life generally? Work, study, socially, ....? Are you taking medication? Drugs? Alcohol? Are you exercising? What are things like in the bathroom department?

Dropping that much weight in that much time does seem drastic. Do go to see a doctor. It could be **anything** (stress, digestion problems, infection) and us not being doctors and you only giving half the story means we can't give you an answer.

This thread might have a short life span.

your body is waking you up, its looking for carbohydrates and other nutrients your not taking in. so i've been told before anyway. try pecking at lots of small things during the day, or find something you like best and have more of that for a bit.

I'm a ferociously picky eater myself. Just try to eat lots of what you can eat. Also, your dislike of ungrated cheese suggests problems more to do with texture than taste (as with alot of picky eaters) so try eating different forms of foods.
And you should go to the doctor.

im like that too i used to eat pretty normal but lately if i eat i only have a bite and i feel ive over eaten

That happened to me years ago, when I had exams. I didn't feel stressed, but my body obviously thought I was. I felt sick whenever I even smelled other food. The only thing I could bear to eat was Cornflakes, the only thing I could drink was Orange Juice. I remember walking into the house and smelling the fish dinner in the kitchen, I nearly vomited. It lasted only two weeks and then I got back to normal.

When you say you are picky, does cleanliness of food have an influence on your choices? My friend was, for ages, really fussy about food. If it was rubbishy or slightly dirty she wouldn't eat it. She lived for two days on one apple that she knew was "clean". After contracting Salmonella and Amoebic Dysentery on a trip in India, she has all but gotten over that, surprisingly, and is now a food loving vegetarian.

Is there something stressing you out? Are you pregnant? Do you read alot about food, are you well informed about food? Why don't you want to go to the doctor? Is it because they scare you, or because you think he either won't take you seriously, or will suggest that maybe the problem is psychological? Do you usually enjoy food, or do you have to be reminded to eat?

Either way, I suggest you find some foods that you can eat. Ham and cheese sandwiches are far better than nothing, but you'll need fruit and veg for vitamins and minerals. Experiment with various foods, apples, grapes, eggs, chicken... just take a bite or two, no pressure to eat the whole meal, just what you can manage. That way you might find things you like without panicking about how much you "should" be eating.

    cheese gives you nightmares

Since im not a doctor, that's my diagnosis...if boards.ie was my local gp, i'd be in serious trouble...especially if people give advise like mine :D
    I strongly advise changing practioner!

I sense a fear of the doctor also...but just to assure you..doctors can only offer advice, and can't do anything to you without your permission....you're free to walk out of his/her surgery at any time...but it could be something serious, which may need medication...and even if it did require something you fear (injections or whatever) he/she can tell you, but you don't have to take it....but it'd be nice to rule out the possibility of any serious problems wouldn't it?

Cleanliness has a MAJOR impact on choices, i have always been like that though, used to drive my parents/brother/mates mad. my brother once pointed out i couldnt live in a bubble.
There isnt anything as such stressing me, am normally quite laid back.
Eating has nevered featured high on my important list suffered from bulimia when i was 14, but that doesnt bother me anymore. Thanks for all the advise.

Is it at all possible that you might be pregnant?

A friend of mine had symptoms similar to yours, feeling nauseous over the smell and sight of food, getting picky about food textures and developing fixations on certain foods (like you have with ham and cheese rolls). Her weight also plummeted initially. She went to the doctor, he took a urine sample, and she found out she was pregnant.

Either way, you should see a doctor pronto.

    dublin8:
walking is the best exercise for keeping off fat, but you have to do it for longish peiods (45 minutes at a time would be good). Exercising n the mornings is better for keeping fat off than other times of the day.
weight training is excellent for losing fat also.
going to the gym 5 days a week might be overdoing it tbh, especially if you are out of shape. Take it easy.
There is a fitness forum in the rec section of this site which has some very informed posters. You shoudl check that out.

    dublin8:

What height are you mate? It makes a difference to the weight gain, for instance a 5kg gain for someone 5'2" is alot worse than someone 6'2". Although that said a 5kg increase is bad at any time.

Dieting is ok, but not really a solution to weight unless you overeat or have a very poor diet to begin with. Exercise, especially weightlifting/hillwalking/swimming is good, combine it with a steam room and you should drop the weight in no time, ie 4-6 weeks.

And don't feel too bad about being 80kg, I'm 15 kg's heavier than you mate :)

Imo that is waaaay too excessive. Going to the gym 5 times a week and walks? Try 3 to start off with. Also I wouldnt think you are eating enough in the day, throw in a few apples and bananas or yogurts during the day. Well thats personally speaking, I couldn't eat that little.
Also a great one is trying to walk/cycle to work. Even if it takes a while just try it.

Edit: ehh, a steam room will only drop water weight, once you rehydrate you'll put it right back on.

I'll not get into a debate about this but the main reason I suggested a steam room was for a detox rather than a weight loss.

However if you want to believe the manufacturers, sauna's help with weight loss. Personally I just like steam rooms, and find them a great way to relax after a workout.

    From: http://www.sundance-sauna.com/h-weightloss.html
In addition, the sweat glands must work to produce sweat, which also requires energy and more calories. Studies show a person can burn up to 300 calories during a sauna session, the equivalent of a two-to-three-mile jog or an hour of moderate weight training.

    Im very sceptical.
How come you burn more calories on a cold day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

I don't know. Although personally I lose weight in the summer and gain weight in the winter so I'd be of the opposite thinking intuitively (ie this makes sense to me, but may run contrary to fact)

Cleanliness has a MAJOR impact on choices, i have always been like that though, used to drive my parents/brother/mates mad. my brother once pointed out i couldnt live in a bubble.

Ok, the cleanliness issue is one that can be dealt with. The thought of suspect food probably makes you uneasy, or even nauseous. The best way to deal with this, if you do want to eat well, is to educate yourself about food. The "safest" food is usually organic food, in the sense that they have not been sprayed with chemicals, but they do come with bits of soil on them.. so that may be a put off for you. Personally, it makes me feel secure about the food I eat, as food that is too "clean" is unnatural to me.

The way to clean vegetables and fruit thoroughly before you eat them (if you worry about them being handled by other people) is to have a basin of luke warm soapy water (Simple soap or non perfumed is best), a cloth used only for washing veg (any cloth will do, so long as you are happy with it), and put the veg in the water, and give it a good rub and a good rinse with cold water. Then dry it with kitchen paper and put it in the fridge. If you don't like other people at your food, then put them in tupperware boxes in the fridge.
You may find meat from a butchers unnerving (again, I prefer it as I know where it comes from), so look for vacuum packed meat. Incidentally, frozen fish and veg (and fruit) are usually frozen immediately after picking and cleaning, so you might be more comfortable with those.
The important thing is that you are eating again, especially as bulimia has been an issue. The best thing to do is to eat little and often, say five smaller meals a day as opposed to three big ones. If it stems from a control issue (and it often does) then this is one way to be in control without sacrificing your health. You might want to make up a list of foods that you know you want to eat for health, for example: 5 veg/fruit portions a day (I would go for more). You can decide how they are prepared, how clean they are and which ones you want to eat. Also aim for 2-4 portions of protein, your ham and cheese are excellent sources. Look out for other cooked meats (like ham) that you might find appetising. Then try and eat approx 4-8 portions of carbohydrate. Go for complex carbs like McCambridges bread and Durum Wheat pasta. You don't need to eat bucket loads of carbs, there is alot of carbohydrate in veg and fruit.

The best thing for you to do is to experiment with food, don't feel stressed about what other people tell you you "should" be eating (this is likely to be part of the problem in the first place). Your health, your body are your most important assets, and they are entirely under your control already... ignore the typical "Get that dinner down your throat"/"A good meal will sort you out" comments. Like I said, little and often is best. Also, learning how to cook well will be of great help to you. Find out about food, try different things here and there.

I'd be interested to know whether the cleanliness issue is about chemicals or about the food being handled by other people...

ok first off, you're not telling us everything
there is a reason you have gone off eating, stress or depression comes to mind, nobody goes right off food for no reason.
you have not said how tall you are but 7.5 stone sound to me like you are heading dangerously underweight, once you drop to a certain weight and stop eating your body turns in on itself, not only that but you stop being hungry - you HAVE TO eat in order to stay healthy and your body is waking you up at night (as someone else mentioned) because you need food.
    GO SEE A DOCTOR
talk to them about the reasons you are not eating - this is not a medical forum and we cannot advice you on such a serious issue, if you care about yourself you will see your doctor asap
