    Hi
    :)
I used to think the 3gig on my old windows 98 PC was loads, then when I got my current 40gig windows XP machine I thought it would last forever. Suddenly 18 months later I have taken up 30 gigs! I dont have a lot of music or software on it in my opinion. About 300 songs and a few apps.

Now this might sound like a dumb question. but here goes:

System restore, restores everything... doesnt it?
Would disabling system restore help to save HD space?
Is there any way to delete a file "forever" off my system [ for privacy and to save HD space ]
How could I best save space- or even better- recover some space..

    TIA

To the best of my knowlage system restore restores drivers and such not your files (docs, mp3's etc).

There are apps that'll "bleach" a file or slack space. Window washer is one.

If you've only got a 30GB drive I'd advise buying a new HD (you can get a 160GB maxtor from Komplett for approx E80).

What format are your songs recorded in. If they're saved as wavs they'll be taking up a lot of space. You should also run disk cleanup to see if you have a lot of temp files that could be deleted.

No, just drivers and system files. System restore will take up some space, but not that much. You could dissable it, but I wouldn't recommend it as it's very usefull if you make a booboo and need to go back on it.

A little bit, but probably not much.

As mentioned above, you can use Window Washer, or other programs like BCWipe. This won't save any space though. Once you delete a file, by any means, the space it occupied is marked as available. The permenant erase methods overwrite the space on the disk with random data so the file cannot be restored, a normal erase simply flags the space as available but won't overwrite it.

The only way to save space is to delete or compress files. Compression may or may not save much space, depends on how compressed the files are already. Best option is to get a second hard disk, if you can afford it.
