    Hi!

My brothers ipod seems to have lost it a bit, it wont mount in windows and is displaying an exclamation mark with folder. Now what i think is after happening is the file system has been borked somehow. What i cant figure out is how it was broken or how to fix it.

It started to happen when he loaded some songs off his friends computer, then this friends ipod went tits up. Now his is going/gone tits up.

On the apple site they say to reset the ipod using the ipod updater, but naturally the updater wont mount the ipod either. Windows does recognise that a usb/firewire (im trying both) hd has been connected, but it wont mount.

what im wondering is could anyone think of a way to format it from windows, even though windows isnt mounting it automatically? i know that the ipod uses its own os and partitioning system on fat32 but iv heard that people have been able to restore from a formatted ipod, anything is better that this tbh.

Anyone any ideas i could try.?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and i have the latest itunes and ipod updater software and the ipod itself is the latest generation (4th/5th??)

Had alot of problems with my ipod 3 weeks ago when i got it. Was new to the ipod and well when i ran update my ipod during this i must have pluged it out of computer during the process. After that my ipod went tits up also. Took me about 2 days to get it to work again.

What i would do is plug your ipod into your docking station if he has one. If not just plug it stright into your computer. It will tell you it does not know what you have pluged into your computer. So what you do is when docked do the manual reset on your ipod. My reset keys are hold down menu and select "for 10 secs" at the same time. When it restarts your computer will detect it i hope. If this does not work i would try it on another computer and do the rest trick again. You might "i think he will have 2" run ipod updater when the computer finaly finds your ipod.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the suggestion charlie, i just tried that and nothing.
ive been reading around and it seems a good few people had similar problems.

The ipod is actually mounted for about 1 second but then gets immediatly unmounted...its extremely irritating.

Iv also tried putting it into "disk mode" but it wont respond to anything,
it just goes from booting (apple logo) to excalamation mark and folder..

The things only one month old, and hes probably going to have to send it back already

make sure the ipod is fully charged , when your transferring stuff to the ipod it needs to have a good charge in it or else it just connects and then drops the connection

    Jee thats a bummer.
If you have a friend with a computer i would try it on his. But make sure its not the same guy who is having problems with his ipod "as you know the ipod dont work on his machine".
