AMD 64 or Pentium 4?

    I planning on building a new PC from the ground up but I'm unsure on whether to use a Pentium 4 processor or an AMD 64 as the core of the PC. Which one would be the better choice? Any answers are greatly appreciated. :)

    Theres been oooodles of these threads, do a search.

    The short of the story is, amd64 if you play games
    intel if your encoding de-coding..

    and if your doing neither..then just get amd64 for longevity..
    it all depends on what exactly you want it for. :)

    I'm basically trying to build a high end machine that can handle converting video files. I'm also trying for a machine with short boot-up and program loading times. Money isn't a problem but I do need information on what the fastest processor is. (Want the thing to last about 3-4 years before building a new one)

    well amd and intel can both handle video converting,
    but it is my understanding that intel are better for converting video..
    in that case id suggest this,

    well if money was no object, thats where id start.

    actually on further inspection that ram would be wasted on the motherboard as it doesnt support that speed ram. :(

    AMD 64 - believe me it is faster than the p4, and will generally cost you LESS to build an Athlon machine than a p4 machine of equivalent power (if such a system is available!) I have the 3200+ model of it and it is unbelievably powerful running XP.

    "Unbelievably powerful" is pushing it a bit there. It's a great chip/mobo chipset, no doubt, and better if you run a 64-bit OS, but as others have said, it is still quite comparable to a P4. From a price/performance point of view (and possibly for slightly more longevity) I would probably go with A64. But there is not much in it.
