A good few people come here looking for teachers to get lessons playing jazz and blues. If you know of any people or places that give jazz or blues lessons, post them up here with contact details and any experience you might have had with them.

Oh and I wouldn't post up any personal addresses unless you want to be bombarded with spam, instead edit them to a non-email format (see next post).

I guess the main place that should be mentioned is Newpark Music Center's Jazz school, run by Ronan Guilfoyle. They give lessons in playing, composition and jazz improvisation among other things.

The Center's website can be found at http://www.newparkmusic.com

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭Fusion251

PMTC which is the Professional Musicians Training Course and the first year costs around €2500 for the year as far as I know and the other 2 years providing you get in cost around €2000...

how about bass lessons in jazz, anyone know of anyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭fortuneg

Ok so, i've been playing guitar for about 4 years at this stage & i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good Jazz-fusion book.
Something along the lines of John McLaughlin from Mahavishnu Orchestra, or Allan Holdsworth.
Or are there any teachers out there that'd specialise in the fusion side of things (keep in mind i'd be a beginner with the theory)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭Fusion251

You could spend a few hundred on the new John McLaughlin instructional DVD or you could just try transcribing some Mahavishnu solo's, or you could pay me to teach ya...

    There ya go 3 options!

I am v keen to learn saxophone - have a shiny new sax but have only managed 4 lessons so far. I travel a lot with work so need a tutor who could come to the house - or be pretty flexible. Anyone know of someone who would be able to help out.

alternatively - has anyone managed to make progress with books/CDs?

    Mike Neilsen
he is involved in Newpark but |I think teaches privately too. One of the best & most innovative jazz guitarists anywhere, not just Ireland. Also teaches theory. I'm a bassist and learned a lot from him during a 6 month period I went to Dublin weekly & got general theory lessons from him.

Anyone know how to contact him?
At this stage I actually know a moderate amount of theory (enough to do for now) but need help with everything else (technique and timing and just playing). Theory is the one thing I can do just on my own and from books.

Go for it, I've only heard great things. It's tough, but if you love playing jazz you wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    Hi,

I've been playing trad music for 7/8 years, but over the last 2/3 years I've also been playing funk and some jazz. The problem is, I play a traditional Irish flute, and it is only in the key of D, with one chromatic note (C natural). However, I have a new flute (also trad) ordered, with lots of keys that will enable me to play chromatically and in any key I want. Although the instrument is still traditional, it will have the same capabilities of a classical one. I am now looking for a Jazz flute teacher. I live in Rathmines, Dublin. Does anyone know a good one?

I am a fast learner with a competent knowledge of the genre, and have studied music for 3 years in N.U.I. Maynooth. In some ways it will be like learning a new instrument again, and I'm quite excited and enthusiastic about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Danny

If you want to improve your vocal skills, control your breathing, work on your vocal techniques, expand your scale or prepare a particular song for auditions, learn how to properly use microphone. I am an active gospel/jazz/blues singer available to help out. I would consider working with a small group, in my place (Donnybrook) or in your home, if that suits you better.

I reckon 1-2 supervised hours per week and some training on your own would be enough to improve your vocal skills in no time!

The fee is €40 per full hour. Please PM me if you're interested.
