    From the creative online store

    Refurbished product (6 months warranty)

    http://ie.europe.creative.com/shop/category.asp?cate=72

    It's 57 euro + 10 euro for delivery on Komplett.ie and that's the cheapest I've seen. Can't really go wrong with 35 euro for a top-end sound card! :)

If you're on a budget you can even pick up a Sound Blaster 5.1 Digital for 15 euro delivered :)

is it possible to upgrade your soundcard if it is part of the motherboard?

    edit:

    http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/SoundCard_Remove.htm

    yes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭netman

It is usually possible to disable the onboard sound through the BIOS.

However, you can also have multiple soundcards in your PC, you just need to tell Windows which one to use. So even if you can't disable onboard sound you can still get a new and better soundcard.

Got it too. Thanks for the heads up - I just hope it doesn't arrive dead because that would be a pain. I dont mind not getting a pretty box or software ( all I want is drivers! ) It should be here by Tuesday, I'll see then.

<edit>Grab the ASIO output plugin for winamp when you install this and also download the MAD mpeg input plugin for winamp - it improves sound quality - a bit.

Just looking at the wireless desktop refurb products.

The 6000 is €49 new and the "Creative® Desktop Wireless" is €59 new.

The 6000 refurb is €29 refurb and the "Creative® Desktop Wireless" is €19.

Then when on the "Creative® Desktop Wireless" page is says at the bottom upgrade to the 6000 for €29.

Why are they charging more for the "Creative® Desktop Wireless" than the 6000 on the normal shop page though?

Also, do you think getting a refurb optical product is risky? And would the keyboard work with any receiver?

    thanks

They have these on sale quite often. Though they've been out of stock for the last while.

Does the basic Sound Blaster 5.1 Digital for €15 have an optical out? If not, which of the available sound cards do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

No digital only. Dunno which cards have optical out. Why do you need it? Most of the USB cards do. I have a USB Creative Mp3+ here which does.

Just ordered one thanks for the link

    Wayout :D

Cheers for the info ricardo. I want to connect the soundcard to the optical in connection on my stereo. what are the features of an mp3+ (compaired to standard 5.1 card) and how much are you looking for it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

The Mp3+ just gives stereo and thats it. Fine for music playback and a decent improvement over most onboard solutions. Gives you optical in and out which is useful. But its pretty basic sound card. I choose it because it draws power from the USB so an AC adapter isn't required. Most USB sound cards need AC power. It worked out fine with my MD anyway. This Audigy 2 ZX would be light years better in terms of analog sound quality. But it doesn't have optical.

PM me if you want more info.

I think you're confusing it with some other card, maybe the notebook version.
The Audigy 2 ZS where this link is pointing to (the one for 35 yoyos) has 5.1 digital out in form of an SPDIF connector. Don't know enough about them to tell you if that's optical or coaxial, but there's definitely digital output on the card.

That's correct there is digital out read the on-board connectors list. Mine was shipped out :D oh I see they sold out I'd say it's in great part due to this thread! How many were sold because of this post, nearly 10!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

I never said it didn't have digital. I said it doesn't have optical. If you don't know enough about it, why correct me? ;)

Reading has gone to hell these days... :D

    Thanks for the tip off.

Got mine today too. I'm well impressed, spent over an hour twidling around with all the various settings and effects - and I'm meant to be studying

LOL, I was agreeing with what netman had said I didn't know what you were looking for. I also got mine - it sounds lovely. I can't get my ASIO winamp plugin to work though but apart from that it's cool.

I got the 7700s back when they were around that price and I'm really happy with them. They work great for music and movies. With music the bass tends to dominate slightly but the wired remote has a seperate volume control for that so it's ok. They're easily loud enough to have the neighbours in complaining without any distortion too. I can't see much of a difference between them and the 7900s.

Creative delivery is great too, got mine in 2 days.
