    I live in Rathmines...
Where would be the nearest and most reliable place to repair my labtop??
The LAN port seems to be broken....
I had to hold the line to make it work until last night it wont work at all....
I don't think this can be fixed by tweaking the software....
I can't afford to get a new labtop with same spec....
    Could you help?

It'd probably be cheaper to get a PCMCIA card or USB device that functions as a network adaptor... rather than paying for the extra labour costs involved with fixing the port.

    USB adaptor something like this:

    The PCMCIA option:

Check the cable first - the little plastic clips break very easily , try the other end of the cable.

next check the metal edge on the laptop where the clip goes into. If someone had forced it before it may just be bent out of shape. Many laptop repair places are board swappers so no point in going to [edit] most of [/edit] them.

Take a picture of the socket with a digital camera to see if you get more detail.

If the circuitry had been damaged you'd be looking at a new motherboard in which case get the usb networkcard

Another option would be to hold a short cable in place with a cable tie or something that could be removed (ie. not glue) and then get a RJ45 coupler.

http://www.marx-computers.com on the network page - do USB for 30 inc vat (clontarf)
don't use pcmcia unless you have no choice - USB dongles start at 15

pcmcia card for €15 - if you are really stuck for cash - just ask if it has a dongle because pcmcia dongles are the work of the devil

Thanks for giving me the link it was very helpful of you
There is nothing wrong with the outside....
The plastic cover thingy is kinda broken...
I think there is a loose wire somewhere inside...
I thought a bit of soldering would solve the problem... maybe not...
    Anyway Thanks!!
