what the title said - What is the current legality of downloading programs from kaaza, edonkey etc.?

i heard that making files available (i.e. uploading) was illegal but that downloading wasn't! is this true?? im asking in mostly relation to Ireland, but i was wondering if there is a wider EU or worldwide ruling on the matter?

i know someone in the US who recently received a letter from her isp informing her that they know she's been up to no good and bad stuff will happen soooon  ! basically it was a non specific threatining letter! however, i think that it's highly unlikely that an isp would seek to sue somebody because they broke someone elses copyright.

i know im in the wrong section but i couldnt be arsed finding the appropriate one.

Downloading off p2p is perfectly legal as long as you are downloading something legal.

Getting any game/program/music thats not freeware off them is illegal.

INAL ALERT!!! There should be no issue if you already bought the original media and use the original serial number, as you have purchased a license to use the software. Problem is, without the original media, this is difficult to prove unless it required registration with the publisher/developer.

Recording for "time delay listening/viewing" for your own use is perfectly legal.
Selling or distributing would be illegal.

so0 the answer is unequivocally clear then - its illegal to download, errr...illegal downloads.

shame, i thought there was a grey area where we could all download illegally under the full protection of the law. guess not :(

    Highlighted for inherent stupidity.

    Sorry, but its true.

It's probably illegal, but so is skipping past the ads in America. :-)

They were trying to pass a law over there that would technically make it illegal to not watch the ads during TV programmes!

Obviously the subtle tones of sarcasm escape your comprehension.

They actually have passed a law (or made a regulation or something) that makes it illegal to sell (make?) something that can skip past the ads (if the TV station doesn't want you skip past the ads). So a fastforward button would be illegal to use (sometimes) on new machines. :)

There is no "fair use" provision in Irish law.

However, I cannot see any judge handing down a fine for making a copy of legally held material for personal use (though they technically could).
