What do you want to write an article on, Pat Paterson?

Nah,I have an interest in journalism so getting involved might prove useful.

The observer is the mouthpiece of the SU, even though they claim not so. Maybe the tribune might be a better option.

The Observer is the SU paper-write for the tribune instead.

thats a complete fallacy - and libelous. Only abject ignorance could result in that opinion.

I am a former deputy editor of the observer, so I've seen the door been battered down by SU members on occassion. There is also a funny attitude sometimes from the lower echelons of the SU as regards teh Ob as the paper is more exposed to the goings on.

Why do you think the observer is being kicked off the SU corridor?

Would you be interested in writing news, opinion, comment, music, etc? cos it's so hectic in there that your request can get lost if you're not specific.

Thats not to knock the the Tribune - I've an awful lot of respect for them after my time in the Observer because the Tribune funds itself - The Ob does as well but has guarantees

TBH I'm a little disappointed no one responded to what I had to say!!! :p

it's all a big fish little pond mentality. But no one else in the pond gives a sh*te

Both papers in UCD are always looking for new writers. The Tribune is underneath the arts block, in room lg18(or lg19, there's a sign on the door anyway) just beside the trap. The Observer is currently located in the SU corridor in the student centre.
Both have their merits, just have a look at both of them and see which one you'd prefer to get involved with. If you go to one and then decide to go to write for the other no one will hold it against you.

Apologies man - i stand corrected on this. :) I just heard that the current SU are trying to gain a bit more control over it after the goings-on about the racist vox-pop.

tis cool. Seems to be a really common assumption/misunderstanding

Genuinely though the only bit of the paper the SU controls is the SU page which they submit to The Observer(and it is clearly marked as such). After that they see the rest of it as soon as it hits the streets - like everyone else.

    in what sense?

I completely agree with Ferdi, the two papers are the biggest load of dog shít I've ever laid eyes. Like ffs, wheres the indepth financial analysis of the stock market, am I up or down? How the hell am I suppose to know with that garbage.
And what about the outside world? Is ucd the only place on earth? Where are the global correspondents getting the latest news NOW? Why should I read this tripe? I should be getting update-to-date news on the Iraqi election from inside Baghdad. My God, the way they write you'd think we're the only university in the world, wheres the perspective? SU elections? More like US elections! Thats what I want and NOW!
And another thing! How come every time I pick up the paper the news is like a WEEK out of date? Hello??
Not to mention the paper reads like it was written by a bunch of amateurs!

Trash. I wouldn't pay HALF of what I pay for the Times to read them.

I think the point of college newspapers is to print college news and global news is left to other nationwide papers like the indo and times.
If you think international news should appear in the college papers do you also think that UCD news should appear in the nationwide papers?
My God, the way they write you'd think we're the only university in the world

In fairness now, I have come across many times stories on students in universities abroad.

C'mon what do you expect, something along the lines of The Irish Times or The Irish Independent? Frankly I think they do an excellent job with the observer considering they are not full time journalists.
