Haggling on price -- do you do it?

Came across this great article today about a guy in the US who tested the premise that everything is open to negotiation and if we do it the right way we can save some money when shopping. It's about a 5 minute read but well worth it.

    Article here

Have to say I'm not great at haggling in shops but after reading this I think I'll give it a go. His story about the car rental is incredible!!

Anyone got any good stories of savings made in shops by negotiating a better price or getting a charge written off by making your voice heard up the ladder of an organisation (like the car rental story he told in the article)

Always haggle when i can. Always off the opinion "all they can say is no" you will never get a deal unless you want it.

I hate it when people try to haggle with me...
Not every thing is negotiationable, try it in newsagents,

"I'll give you 90 cent for this paper", "i'm sorry it costs €1.10"

I get this kind of thing in work, I'm not in a position to give you a discount on anything. asking me for one just pisses me off ...
sure if you're buying some thing expensive, haggle away, but for you're shopping in the supermarket even if it comes to €150 , you just cant. sorry. if you do you just piss the poor person at the check out off and cause a hold up for the people in the que behind you. every one hates you and you look like an idiot.

haggling is allowed for some things ... large expensive things.
now I'm sure people who said "all the time" mean all the time if it's some thing expensive ... but I've seen people haggle on sums less than 2 euro.

try haggling on the price of your pint

    yup ...
"ah sure they can only say no..."

they dont put up much of a fight though...
they know they're chancing, so you just have to say no 2 or 3 times.

Oh for sure there are only certain things you can haggle on and as the guy in the article said, he did try haggling in the beginning on the price of the hot dog but that was a wrong approach. At the end of the article he said he was getting another hot dog and was going to try to negotiate and

"For one moment, I thought about making an offer on a second one. But I heard the words of the master, telling me to let it go. "Is screwing a working guy out of seventy-five cents really worth the time?" Herb had asked me during our session. "What's the hourly rate there?" So I started slathering on the mustard instead."

But would truly advise printing out the article and reading it, it opened my eyes anyway!

I always try and get a student discount, wherever I go, even McDonalds.

    And Four to Avoid...

    1. "That's funny, your mom was certainly willing to go lower."

    2. "Sounds good, but first let me check with the little man who lives inside my pants."

    3. "No, you put your gun down first."

    4. "Okay, one more bracelet and you can have the whole stinkin' island."
    :)

A good one is (esp in Ireland where all items seem to be priced the exact same in different stores!) to say to the sales person - 'I saw the exact same item for the same price in another store. Why should I buy it here?'

Invariably they will take they easy way out and offer a discount to get your business rather than ****e on about how their product support/range/guarantee etc is better.

As my tattoo artist so succinctly put it - I'm the only one who can walk into the studio & name his own price for his tattoos & get them - LMAO.....

I haggle like a motherf****r over EVERYTHING I think I can get away with haggling for..... f**k that, we live in rip-off ireland...
