Yep, just inherited a PowerMac 8200 from work and was wondering does anyone know what I could use it for.

I have a wireless / wired network at home and I'd like to tie it into that somehow.

So what i'd like to know is whats the best way I could put it to use.

    Thanks
    BF

    A door stop ???!!!

Seriously it's fairly long in the tooth at this stage so unless someone has upgraded it in some way - CPU, OS etc. - I'd be inclined to bin it.

That said does it have a network port at the back. Looking at the spec here it has 10Base-T socket does yours have this if so there may be some hope getting it connected to your network. What version of the OS is installed on it ?

Ain't no such animal as an 8200 bubba. I assume you mean 8100...

You could spend about $200 on it and stick a G3 inside - lookee here. Although she ain't gonna be no racehorse.

Alternatively, you could just network it, stick 9.2.2 on it, turn it into a mailserver, apache server, mysql for wikis and the like, CVS server, print server - whever other server you can manage... use it for automatic backups - throw a buncha large drives inside it and backup all your other machines.

It will be a snail, and will probably lie down and die fairly soon. I wouldn't use it for mission critical stuff like the overthrow of the Yankee Govt or anysuchlike...

    mea culpa.

I used to have an 8100, had a nasty habit of shredding my fingers when I took the case apart. The 8200 looks similarly lovely.

I'm getting a guy from Apple that comes into our office every week to stick 9.2.2 on it for a laugh.
Would it be possible to use this as a firewall ??

pretty crappy machine nowadays. 9.2.2 will run fine, a bit slow tho. you could use it as a firewall if you had software old enough to run on it. Personally, i'd save up for a Mac mini if you want cheap (€500). at least it will run OSX. As for it dying pretty soon, i doubt it, those old Macs lasted years and years.
