CF or SD memory, which to get?

I'm getting a used toshiba e740 PDA and I have the option of using CF or SD memory slots for my upgrade. I want to use it to store music and video files. I'm basing my choice on price mainly, but if there is an advantage to either I'd like to know. My main question is really, is there a max that certain devices can take, i.e. if I buy a 1gb CF card will it work as long as the device has a CF slot. I know it seems obvious but I've been trying to piece things together and have been reading about dual layer cards or something to that effect that don't work in some devices (phones).
    Help would be appreciated.
