Customs Duty and Amazon

Apologies Mods if this is in the wrong category (not sure where to ask really)

Anyway, just looking for a quick word of advice. I am mucho tempted to get the iRiver H320 off of Amazon.co.uk. They say on their shipping pages that VAT is included in the price. Therefore, is there still a risk of customs imposing additional duty if the package is intercepted??

Anyone with experience of ordering such high value products from Amazon care to shed some light?

You're safe. As you'll be paying UK VAT, you won't be liable for any more charges. This would also apply if you were to import from any other EU member state.

Amazon UK should be paying 21% VAT now (Irish VAT, not English VAT), beacuse they have registered here.. because they were obliged to by selling over a defined value to Ireland.

Anywho, either way if VAT is included (be it the correct rate of 21% or the incorrect rate of 17.5%), you have no further liability to the Irish government. This is true of all intra-EU purchases.

AFAIK Amazon.com won't deliver any electronic goods overseas. I'm sure you could find a lesser known smaller website that does though! :)

He is asking about amazon.co.uk - as the poster above says apart from books you will generally pay a little extra over the quoted price on the uk site because they charge the irish rate of vat. The extra normally appears in the final tally before you confirm your order.
