Norton ghost

    Hi all,

I recently bought a new 200gb HD and want to xfer my current 20gb drive onto a partition then let the PC boot up from that.
I ran Ghost and it copied the drive over no problem yet when I remove the old drive the PC will not boot up off the new partition. I presume Win2k does not like hardware changes so is there anything in the registry or boot.ini I need to change?

    Much obliged,
    Nick

might be simple enough but has the new drive been added to the boot sequence in the bios?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭Gryzor

could be them pesky jumpers....make sure its set to "master"...

Win2k has no problems with being Ghosted from disk to disk. I'd go with Chalk and Gryzor and have a look at your jumpers and your BIOS.

Was this the machine that you Ghosted the disks on, so that at least you know the BIOS is capable of supporting a 200GB drive.

Also make sure that ghost made the partition active.

Any further info on this one?
What happens when it wont boot, does it just give the standard no OS message?

win2k will see the HD when I boot up with both of them in. Its working fine, will have to have a wee rejig of them pesky jumpers though.
It is the usual no operating sys found msg. Cant recall it exactly at d mo and I'm no where near the PC.
Will have to check the boot sequence as well, didnt think of that.
    Cheers

you probably dont have it set in the bios to boot from the 200gb drive, doesnt matter if its master or slave, if the bios is not set to boot from a device it wont boot from it

ok so the pesky thing was set as master, nothing else was plugged in and it was detected as primary master. Set it to boot first in the bios and still gives me that stupid no system disk error.
Mate of mine mentioned having a look at the config.sys, is there a point and if so what should I be looking for????
    cheers

Do you have a dos boot disk? if so boot from that, run fdisk and make sure the partition is a primary one and it is set as active.
Presumably you can also check this out in Ghost, never used the prog myself.

This may not be your problem, but you might need to modify the boot.ini file.
It will have loads of lines with something like this in it.

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2) blah blah blah

If the old drive had any recovery partitions or hibernate partitions, the boot.ini could be pointing to, say the second partiton on the disk. Now you've cloned it, the boot partiton is probably the first partiton. Change the partition(2) to partiton(1).

I could be talkin complete cack

Well I sorted that issue, looks like setting it to active in disk manager did the trick. Thanks for the advice guys.
But as usual once one problem is solved another rears its ugly head...

Seems that win2k sp4 has taken offence to the new hardware and is playing silly buggers.

It loads up to the wallpaper but when the little box that says 'loading your
settings' pops up it is replaced with 'saving your settings' then the two of them just kinda mess around alternating constanly between them.
So Win2k looks like its trying to shut down and boot up at the same time!!!
    Any ideas out there???

Format and reinstall? Seriously, might be a pain in the hole but it'll work. Just save anything important onto a USB flash disk if youve got one, format that bad boy and reinstall, problem solved.

Only way you can be sure you're on a stable platform. Flutin' around wih registry etc. will probably come back to haunt you later.

So, repeat after me: from the C: prompt, type the following -

    format c: /q/s/fb - fb is for f****n b******d :)

If you still have the Ghost image then you could run that and run sysprep after it. That would fix the hardware issues.

Sysprep(http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/sysprep/default.asp) sounds like its worth a shot
will give it a go and let yis know

Only use Firefox, you know that browser is bound to cause problems.

Oops sorry, that's the solution to the "other" computer problem.

Not helpful advise deadwing, if you dont know then dont offer unhelpful advise.

On that sysprep utility. How do I run it? via DOS? cos if its in windows thats not much use to me since I cant get past the two pop up boxes fighting with each over over whether or not to load my settings or save my settings

    Sysprep runs in Windows,

For XP users it also means you then have to reactivate the original copy of windows and the Clone.

The 200GB drive - is it recognised by the BIOS as such , win2k seeing it proves nothing since 2K has it's own drivers. Also is the partition active ?

the settings sounds like the problem I had - it is getting confused about the drives and thier letter - since both are C: ??

Sysprep worked a treat and windows will now boot up off the partition (drive D:)
Only thing is all the registry entries still point to drive C:!
Is there a way to change all the C:'s to D:s in the registry automiatically or even perhaps change the drive letter in DOS?
Windows will not allow me to change the drive letter of the system drive in disk manager.
